Wife & kid free the past 24hrs, so I had an A24 marathon: Babygirl, Heretic, X, Pearl, and MaXXXine. All were very entertaining, but of these five I think Heretic was my favorite

And yet Joe Rogan puts guests on who say "Vaccines aren't actually responsible for the reduction in infectious diseases.”
The image is a heatmap titled "Measles," showing measles cases across U.S. states from 1928 to 2003. States listed on the y-axis include Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The x-axis spans years from 1928 to 2003. A vertical line marks the introduction of the measles vaccine around 1963. The color scale at the bottom ranges from blue (0 cases) to red (4,000+ cases), with shades of green, yellow, and orange indicating intermediate values (1,000, 2,000, 3,000 cases). Before 1963, many states show frequent high case numbers (yellow to red), while after 1963, cases drop significantly, with mostly blue indicating near-zero cases.

We’ve started watching Premier League football and enjoy it much more than American football. The Mrs did some research & decided that Newcastle would be her team. When I asked how she decided, I found out it’s because they’re closest to the town from her favorite show: All Creatures Great & Small 😀

My wife and I don’t celebrate this day. We don’t see the reason to do that. We love each other and tell each other that every day. If you just save that up for one day, what kind of love is that?

Reading through Stony The Road by Henry Louis Gates Jr. Very informative and interesting. I think I’ve learned more history in the first chapter than I did in school.

I am still amazed at the questions my kid will ask. Just today it was: - Have you ever ripped a chicken in half? - Did you watch Barney growing up? - Did you like having braces? - Will you buy me a drum set for my birthday?

I hate being sick. Aches and a stuffed nose… blah. Keeping the fluids and Kleenex stocked and close by. Hopefully past the worst of it now, but only time will tell.

Needed to hear this today. Today marks 3 months in trying to land a job. I know that’s not a long time for many, but I haven’t gone this long in not working since I was 16. I know your sincerity behind your words and I appreciate it.

Just realized it had been awhile since I heard anything about the 2 astronauts stuck in space. Found out they’ve been there for 6 months already! Praying they do well and have a safe return home in February.

No matter how many books you read, or others you talk to about it, parenting a neurodivergent child can be exhausting. Most days are amazing. Today was one of those other days and I just don’t know how to recover.

Why all the dunking on Skeleton Crew? It’s only a couple of episodes in. Can you at least let them tell the whole season before you complain? We’ve lost too many good shows because people online start this garbage without even giving it a fair chance. In other news, old man yells at the moon 😉

Family Christmas movies that are required each year at our house: Muppet Christmas Carol, White Christmas, and Elf. Every thing after that is gravy. I do add Die Hard to my own viewing list, but that’s just me.

It’s be nice if the ground was at least covered with snow. We’re in December and I just fell like snow makes sense mentally right now. How else can I truly enjoy hot chocolate and movies on a cool Dec night?

If you watch a good number of them, the only thing that makes them Christmas movies is that the setting of Christmas time is central to the story. Movie makers could just as easily make these for Valentine's Day, Independence Day, or even Arbor Day.

Jon Mierow @jonmierow.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
I don't think so. Let's look at many of the Hallmark Christmas movies. While probably romantic at their core, most would agree looking at the title, art, or description, that they automatically are included as Christmas movies.

What about Santa, the North Pole, reindeer, or Christmas magic? Isn't at least one of these needed for a movie to be considered a Christmas movie?
100 0
Jon Mierow @jonmierow.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
While Lethal Weapon and First Blood are also 80's action movies that take place at Christmas, their stories don't require that setting. Both can take place at any time of year and still keep their story. Some elements might need adjustments, but the central plot points don't need Christmas.

Would this work for a Memorial Day party? Probably not, but I'm not a movie producer or screen writer, so what do I know? I just enjoy movies.

Jon Mierow @jonmierow.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
The same is true of Die Hard. The story needs to take place at Christmas. Without that setting the story falls apart. Hans' plan requires Christmas not only for the Christmas party at Nakatomi Plaza, but for the laid back response of the local police.

Jon Mierow @jonmierow.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
In order for the setting of Christmas to make something a Christmas movie, I think it should be a key plot point. Examples? Elf, Miracle on 34th Street, and White Christmas. If you remove the Christmas setting of any of these movies, the story falls apart.

Isn’t that mostly what life with a cat is like? To be clear… NOT calling you, or anyone, a cat lady (or appropriate gender identifier). My experience is cats seem to be on that same wavelength. But what do I know? 🤷‍♂️

That sucks. Thankfully that’s not the type of Christmas music the rest of the family puts on, so I might be safe for a little bit.
