What do these actually involve? What sort of things was a client expected to do for their patron? Presumably the patron was better off/more influential than the client.

I.e. the rich gay men in their country clubs are now out of the closet and married.

I did indeed hear this joke in one small part of fandom decades ago. They played the game until someone came up with what they considered the winner, which was "Darth Field Fly Rule."

Usually it's the Hylux, which sadly they don't sell in North America.

I have often thought that, if you are a member of a religion that believes in the literal bodily resurrection of the dead, you really ought to be making a plan for how you're going to handle child care.

Prior to receiving it receiving its official name, Eris's discoverers called it Xena (and its moon was Gabrielle). The fact that the official name of Eris's moon, Dysnomia, translates as "Lawless" may or may not be a coincidence.

On en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europea... e.g. I see "Italy, Germany, and Imperial Japan ... increasingly allied with each other, and during World War II they would be known as the Axis powers." The past tense is hard to search for separate from the passive, though.

I think they're probably saying "ALly is a verb", but they shouldn't be. 😀

I think you ally *with* somebody. And this follows the usual rule that the verb is stressed on the second syllable. (US Northeast)

Half of Örjan Westin's last name got cut off, too; something went very wrong on that slide.

I definitely like the innovation of pre-recorded lists of finalists. (And though the presenter does say the name of the winner live, they've *just heard it said* so the odds of them screwing it up are hopefully low, and did not happen in this ceremony.)

Jon Lennox @jonlennox.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
One finalist did have half their last name omitted from the slide (a slide that also word-wrapped other finalists unfortunately), but all the names were nonetheless said in full.

I think even wooden recorders are a lot more robust for grade school kids than a lot of the alternatives would be.

(The Doylian explanation is that it's a kids show and they don't want the kids imitating gun usage.)

I've always thought this was the most likely Watsonian explanation for why the Avatar world doesn't have firearms, despite their general technological level. You don't want to be carrying gunpowder when your enemy's a firebender...

When the community figured this out the Netscape engineers reportedly responded "what took you do long"?

I am reminded of Netscape's export-grade cryptography back when that was a thing. It turned out there was a single byte in the binary which controlled whether to use full-strength or export-grade cryptography, and editing the binary was trivial.

I believe it was Randall Garrett and Isaac Asimov — as I heard it Garrett came up with the idea and Asimov finished it. (Garrett's reputation was similar to Asimov's.)
