It's finally out! Our work showing we can use light to do recycling of plastics at much lower temperatures than currently done at scale. The technology shows promise as it might be able to deal with mixed plastic waste, which currently can't be recycled. www.nature.com/articles/s41... #recycling

Photo-initiated solvent-mediated depolymerization of consumer poly(methyl methacrylate) without chlorinated reagents - Nature Communications
Chemical recycling of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) typically requires high temperatures. Here, the authors report the UV-initiated depolymerisation of PMMA at low temperatures, in non-chlorinated ...

#SummerShowcase: Dr Jon Husband (@jonhusband.bsky.social) shows how #chemists can make #plastics more sustainable rather than replacing them entirely - reducing greenhouse gas emissions through better materials and recycling solutions for items like polystyrene and disposable gloves.
Dr Jon Husband presents his research on low temperature depolymerisation of consumer viny plastics.

Gutted to have the last two years of my life being scoped by brilliant work by Anastasaki et al www.science.org/doi/10.1126/.... For sure there's some stuff they have missed so hopefully can do a really nice follow-up to this work in the coming months!

Visible light–triggered depolymerization of commercial polymethacrylates
The reversion of vinyl polymers with carbon-carbon backbones to their monomers represents an ideal path to alleviate the growing plastic waste stream. However, depolymerizing such stable materials rem...

🌍Today marks the official launch of @bath-iscc.bsky.social ! Against the background of the triple planetary crisis of #climatechange, #pollution and #biodiversityloss, the Institute’s launch could not be more timely. At the heart of our mission are 7 key strengths that define who we are:
Multidisciplinary: We have over 50 core members and a wider academic community representing every Faculty and School at the University of Bath.

By breaking down disciplinary silos, our aim is to lead transformative research across three core themes:

Sustainable Chemical Technologies: Designing and deploying sustainable molecules, materials and manufacturing processes

Sustainable Systems: Measuring sustainability in decision making

Social Transformations: Enabling equitable, societal shifts toward sustainabilityAcademically renowned: Our researchers secure significant grant funding, enabling us to undertake ambitious research, attract top talent, and deliver innovations that tackle the most pressing sustainability challenges of our time.

In 2023-24, core members achieved approximately £21 million
           in grant funding
Research published in leading international journals by our 50+ core members received approximately 4,000 online views and 650 citations in 2023-24
Our members lead high-profile national and international research consortia
We convene global research conferences, workshops, and events
