It's no contest between two French cop thrillers this week: Inspecteur Lavardin is a gourmet dish with a twist while Un Flic is a tired heist movie aping Hollywood. Pressure is a high quality war drama. Watchers is a true folk horror classic. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

For meticulous story-telling, Cavalcanti's fifth column, wartime thriller takes the honours this week. Basic Instinct with an enigmatic Sharon Stone driving Michael Douglas to the point of distraction is probably Verhoeven's best film. A Kind of Loving is a visit to a sadly forgotten England.

A great selection this week. Sam O'Neill made top notch horror. Viridiana pulls not punches. But my film of the week is the wonderful restoration of Winstanley made on a shoestring in 1975. A forgotten rebel rescued from historical oblivion. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

A bunch of comedies this week - Sheep Detectives are top. But the Sands Film Club season for the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War goes on. Ken Loach's Land & Freedom rests on the mantle of George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia. My FotW. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

A very strong field this week. JC is magnificent in Johnny Guitar. Battle Royale is Japanese scathing satire at its best. The Ear was banned in Stalinist Czechoslovakia and then forgotten. FWtBT romanticises Spanish Civil War but is my FotW. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

Louis Malle added gallic ennui to film noir. France cannot escape the lingering consequences of its imperial fiascos. Joris Ivens made The Spanish Earth was made before the hope for a new world was crushed. The film carries the fateful burden. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

The Petrified Forest is an adaptation of the smash hit broadway play from 1936. Howard fought off Hollywood execs from injecting their saccharine dope. He insisted on taking Bogart from stage to Hollywood. But Last Exit to Brooklyn is my FotW. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

The final scene of Modern Times has Chaplin's tramp and Goddard's gamin walking towards an uncertain future, down a long highway to a distant horizon - both with fixed rictus grins. Fred and Ginger would use glorious hoofing to escape. FotW. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

Shades of 1936. An incomparable Laughton as Rembrandt defying the philistine bourgeois conventions of his age. Da Sica's winning smile and Renoir's romantic outing capture a "lost moment". Chaplin's ghosts have never been exorcised. MT is FotW. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

Hayley Mills playing opposite Alan Bates in the grim-up-north Whistle Down the Wind is my film of the week. Film programming on TPTV is like BBC2 in the 1970s. Mr Polly is also a bit of a gem. The revival of Play for Today is inspired. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

Film of the week is the languorous La Dolce Vita. Night of the Demon (English version) is one of the best horror films ever made. Au Grand Balcon (1949), a rare foreign film on UK TV, thanks to TPTV. Jean Rollin's Lips fails to impress again. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

I don't know how it is that I've never seen Our Man in Havana. Alec Guinness was a genius and Graham Greene's script captures the subtle nuances of Britain's imperial decline. A satire on the decline of imperial pretensions and what is next. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

My FOTW is The Wrong Man by Alfred Hitchcock, starring a stoical Henry Fonda in a bleak true story of injustice with a downbeat ending. It bombed at the box office. Rob Roy is pure Walter Scott Highland romanticism - forget noisome Braveheart. #letterboxdFriday #lastfourwatched #letterboxd #filmsky

El Greco's dramatic and mesmerising View of Toledo. ~1600. I love the threatening clouds, the hills seem about to swallow the town or perhaps slide into the Tajo below. This is one of the earliest examples of a landscape painting though not a true topographical representation.
