My mother wants to send me a birthday card. Maybe she should take a photo of it first and send to me via WhatsApp, just in case.

Politicians and the billionaire owners of the media are all benefiting from leaving essential services privatised. Too many politicians are selling themselves out to billionaires too these days, and are not really working for us

Ofcom will do nothing at all. Chief Melanie Dawes is married to Benedict Brogan - ex-chief political commentator of the Torygraph and former director of public affairs at Lloyd’s banking group. And Ian Cheshire was chair of Barclays UK retail bank. OFCOM represents the rich and powerful

Starmer never seemed very good at promoting his party’s achievements, and that didn’t help

I hate Boots. The glasses I got were expensive and low quality, and no doubt I paid commission to the optometrist too. The experience was worse than having to deal with a double glazing salesman. They keep sending reminders calling themselves “your optician”. They are not mine and I’ll never return

I seem to remember walking through the front of the building to get to the station, but now it’s a hotel. One of the best looking buildings in London IMO

1. Protect diesel reserves, which we will need to do in the current situation, saving it for essential services 2. Be better for the environment and my own health Am I right? Am I the only one? Let’s see where we are in 6 months time

I’m making the choice not to use my diesel car at all at the moment, except for a few necessary longer journeys. I’m using my bicycle to get groceries, where I could order online delivery but hope to get a bit fitter with the extra exercise instead. If enough people do this too, it will:

I couldn’t see in the LP manifesto 2024. Maybe that’s why? Would it trigger an election if Burnham wants to go against the 24 manifesto that the Labour Party has a mandate to uphold?

jongreenme.bsky.social @jongreenme.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Ah, my mistake. Yes, it will be a risk because the establishment and right wing elites will throw everything they’ve got into the next election to ensure they retain their power and influence. Let’s hope enough voters realise what they stand to gain

Not win outright, no. But they would have to form a coalition in the same way numerous European countries do. It forces compromises (not always a bad thing) but also removes the outright power to get things done (not always good thing). There are many other angles too, but on balance I prefer PR

I’m interested in what protection of pension credits there will be. And also how much, and how many, pensioners will fall into the income tax trap. Scrapping the triple lock is a surely a meaningless discussion without including these two things alongside, methinks
111
jongreenme.bsky.social @jongreenme.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Nobody has even mentioned the levels of pension credit, which surely needs to be in the discussion too? I want to see more well thought out responses and less political sound bites
000
jongreenme.bsky.social @jongreenme.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Sure, the rich need to pay more tax than they have been. But I want to see evidence that pensioners will suffer without the triple lock. Nobody is talking about reducing state pensions. A high proportion of retirees also have other pensions besides. The poorest will still get pension credits too

I worked as a trainee telecoms engineer at the power signal box just off the end of the last platform at Euston. BR had its own telephone network at the time and possibly still does. I was awe struck at the age of 17. Happy times.

Mostly, private equity is just spare cash that the super rich cannot find any other way to spend. It should have been both taxed, and had limits put in place on CEO pay and more pay to the workers. PE is a driver of inequality

If we could guarantee that every penny made from Jackdaw gas would go towards climate adaptation and renewables, then it might be possible to swallow that bitter pill. But we all know who will really benefit the most, so no, there should be no more drilling

It should never have come this. It would never have come to this if the Westminster elites and London-centric establishment had understood the importance of, and need for fairness and equality. To them, equality is a dirty word. Until they understand, I’ll support an independent Scotland

Will the banks care when they repossess millions of homes and then rent them out to keep the money flowing?
000
jongreenme.bsky.social @jongreenme.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I would argue that it hasn’t fallen yet, but that it is falling fast and that it’s seemingly unstoppable. Is there a silver lining? We’re all still looking for it because we need it. I’ll pop into my local Waterstones soon and seek out some hope

A man who lives outside the UK to avoid the very same taxes that would have made high levels of immigration less necessary, and the rise of the far right less likely. I’m utterly disgusted every time he opens his mouth

Beat me to it. Neither is acceptable, and the unions must back down now and allow Burnham to put sensible caps in place

jongreenme.bsky.social @jongreenme.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Isn’t crypto a threat to the banking system? Surely they have more money to throw at this if they reach a trigger point (am I right?). If banks are forced to act against this kind of democracy-undermining behaviour, just watch banking charges go up. Burnham needs to get a grip and do something

It was also cheap to buy and has been reliable. I do realise that it isn’t good for the environment (neither are EVs for that matter, even if they are not as bad). But I don’t feel too guilty because I’ve walked, cycled, got the train or worked from home for most of my working life

I’m amazed at the response on this thread. It’s a far more emotive topic than I expected, and it has been quite an education! I still have to say that my diesel is best for me. It’s very comfortable and practical (it’s a Jaguar XF Sportbrake) and is surprisingly economical at 50mpg

jongreenme.bsky.social @jongreenme.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Yes, I’ll second that. Or at least post an explanation or gist of the article so that we can better understand the context and relevance of it. I want to know how fast things could get worse the longer they leave the renationalising of TW

We’re paying (I think) the equivalent of $9.70 in the UK. It’s always been expensive here but even this is getting ridiculous and unaffordable for a lot of people

Is it really an age thing though? So many uneducable people exist across all age groups. They socialise with their own types and learn from and spread each other’s superstitious nonsense, and have done for millennia

If 16 years of Tory rule couldn’t reduce rents to an affordable level leaving renters unable to afford to live, how does she propose to fix the problem that they created? I think her paying us back the money she didn’t need would be a good start

jongreenme.bsky.social @jongreenme.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
The media should be asking these questions but mostly won’t. Most people now get their news from social media sources, and newspapers will eventually die out anyway, but GB News and other right wing outlets rarely question previous Tory government mistakes either - same as it’s always been

Are the same politicians who are against vaccines getting vaccinated themselves? And is all this just to justify cutting vaccine funding to cut taxes? I hope I’m wrong about my thinking but hope is fading

Crash avoidance tech is now a requirement for all new cars sold in Europe. I live in the UK and all newer cars that I’ve driven have this. Maybe you don’t have this problem across the Atlantic? I envy you if that’s true - the tech is not developed enough and frequently causes needless braking

You cared enough to respond… But you are right about choice: EVs are good but not for everyone
020
jongreenme.bsky.social @jongreenme.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I’m not ready to give up my old diesel because; 1. No subscriptions to heat the seats 2. No lane detection/crash avoidance tech that scares the crap out of me because it doesn’t work 3. I do too many long journeys that EVs would make impractical 4. I won’t need to scrap my car when the battery dies

Holdings are usually diversified for the very reason that some companies may fail to perform or even fail altogether. The hit would be biggest to the biggest investors, i.e., the already wealthy. No need to penalise the poor to pay. We should still nationalise IMO

It’s incredible that Tony Blair is remembered even now for how good he was at promoting his government’s achievements (even though I despised some of them 😬) Why did Starmer not do the same? He would have gained a lot more in the opinion polls
