The detector has a giant mystic mural on the walls, and the artist statement (www.giannetti.com/pages/statem...) is a loosely expanded Marge Simpson "I just think they're neat"? The experiment's wiki page has a diagram that randomly uses a singapore airlines Airbus A380 for scale???
a diagram showing illustrations of detector components, with a singapore airlines-liveried A380 for scale and two tiny human figures

A small marina with a ramp dock covered in kayaks and small sail boats. A small motorboat is tied to a dock at left. A cargo ship passes through the Saint Lawrence seaway near dusk in front of a full moon Another cargo ship passes through the seaway, a small powerboat is in the foreground running nearby and making the big ship look big

I guess there’s no “is a giant mushroom” tag in the Zillow database. (This place rocks and I’d never seen the inside either)

Put me in the RIB to do donuts around the capsule for half an hour next time. I'm RIB certified. I can be trusted with the NASA RIB.

Big military industrial complex asterisk aside, the Yorktown was super cool and you can go all over inside it, you can go right up and touch the planes on the deck.
The huge front half of an aircraft carrier, seen from a bridge connecting it to land. I’m about to walk onto it. Looking up the exhaust nozzle of an F-4 , you can see straight through to daylight in the intake because the engine has been removed. There is no barrier or rope restricting access to the plane. The tower of the Yorktown, a decommissioned aircraft carrier of the WWII through Vietnam war eras, seen from the flight deck on a sunny day

I have mostly not followed the Artemis mission, but today of all days it was pretty cool to visit the (replica) Apollo 8 capsule and its AUTHENTIC recovery hook on the USS Yorktown.
A replica Apollo 8 capsule in a museum display on the hangar deck of an aircraft carrier. A big yellow hook hangs from the ceiling above.

I feel like the 43rd St Public Morgue is an under-discussed part of NYC street culture.
The sidewalk on 43rd St. On the wall of a building is a grid of six square stainless steel hatch doors with lever handles, like in a morgue.

Feels like an opportunity for some classic "vents that mostly go nowhere except for a circle"
An old Realistic brand audio handset, with a once-common hardware design that included a broad grid of holes, but most of them are blind holes that are really just shallow dents. A circle of full holes that leads to the internal speaker is obviously visible.

Found what looks like a pretty cool person at a pretty cool url. sunnyday.mit.edu
"Professor Leveson started a new area of research, software safety, which is concerned with the problems of building software for real-time systems where failures can result in loss of life or property. One advantage of this topic is that nobody questions its goals, except for a few misanthropes (who don't matter anyway). She and her students produced a formal requirements specification for TCAS II, a real collision-avoidance system required on all commercial aircraft in U.S. airspace. One of the lessons she has learned from this project is never to do anything like it again. The FAA was pleased with it though and adopted it as their official specification. She and her students are now analyzing safety in NextGen (the planned upgrades to the air transportation system). She claims that you should not read anything into the fact that she has been taking the train a lot lately."

Fascinated by the guy who, in the age of e-bikes, wants $500 for a mountain bike with a honda lawnmower engine strapped to the back wheel.
A silver mountain bike in front of a garage door. There is a large red four-stroke honda engine mounted above the rear wheel, and some kind of big hoop attached to the wheel to transmit drive. Also has 90s style bar-ends on the handlebars.

This is the whole restaurant; this is the correct restaurant
The interior of a small, old fashioned lunch counter with Formica counter and vinyl topped stools. There are only a couple of tables in the small space and about 7 or 8 stools. An older couple sits at the counter eating burgers and chicken. The sole employee working a flat top is just out of frame

Amazing accident of history that this festival takes place on labor day, and we therefore don't have an "in the aftermath of 9-11" shrimp and petroleum festival poster. I guess they had fully processed it by 2002:

We’ve been making a lot of iced tea lately and we have a little perpetual stew thing going on with oleo saccharum to sweeten it. Just tossing more citrus peel and sugar in when you have it, scoop some back out when you need it. It rocks.
A deli cup with a bunch of lemon and lime zest sitting in sugar, which has drawn out the oils from the zest and is very damp, fragrant, and flavorful. It’s a delicious citrus blend that people are calling “the taste of summertime”
