I'm told that over the past couple months, sixteen grizzly bears have died at human hands in the southwestern corner of the province. At least eight were killed on one ranch. Several were not "problem" bears but were shot by mistake. Most were shot by Todd Loewen's vigilante "hunters"
. A mother and her cubs were shot after the
mother was injured by a vehicle.
I can't attribute the source of this information as it could create problems for the person who told me.
Assuming the information is correct, this is a shockingly high mortality rate. There are those who argue that the area's grizzly population is growing and expanding its range. That has in fact been the case in recent years, but with that many dead bears (and it doesn't include poached bears that never get reported), it's probably no longer the case. Grizzlies are among the least productive animals on the continent and take a long time to recover from unnatural levels of mortality.
I'm posting this because, if it's true, it should be public information, not managed as confidential management data hoarded by worried wildlife management professionals overseen by a Minister who wants to control the story.
There are people who can provide more detail to the story, but I'm not one of them.

did my own research on ai data centres in alberta 😤
Satire of the Alberta government’s data centre website:

“First, we brought back measles.
Next, we're putting people in pods!

Not only are Al data centres are the best way for billionaires and the oil industry to keep making money, they are also prime real estate for the next big thing: human batteries in pods. This site explains what they are (humans in pods), why they are being built here (humans in pods), and how Alberta's rules protect the things that matter: corporate profits, extracting more fossil fuels, polluting the environment, and using pod-trapped humans as batteries to generate excess wealth for the 1%.”

decided to recycle Danielle Smith’s recent letter to Calgary City Council and use it to advocate for Corb Lund’s petition waternotcoal.ca
Dear Premier Smith,

I am writing regarding your recent decision to ignore the direct democracy action of Corb Lund's Water Not Coal Citizens' Initiative Petition.

While I can appreciate the province's monumental efforts to muzzle environmental scientists and proceed full speed ahead with as many disastrous coal mines as you can fit into a square mile of the Rockies, I am concerned by both the timing of the referendum cutoff and the potential consequences for workers, businesses, public safety, and Alberta's reputation as a world-class event destination.

The Rockies welcome a province's worth of visitors each year and is, arguably, one of the largest tourism draws in Alberta. Their impact extends far beyond the foothills, and beyond supporting thousands of jobs and generating substantial economic activity for all across the province.

What is particularly concerning is that while government stakeholders were aware of due dates, the referendum cutoff date was not communicated until it was too late for Corb Lund's petition. By that point, organizers, canvassers, businesses, artists, and other Albertans had already made significant investments of time, money, and energy to fight this silliness. As Tourism Calgary recently noted, "regulatory certainty is the bedrock of private investment." Surely when you tell Albertans something, they can come to expect it, no?

I am also concerned about the public safety implications of platforming a separatist petition that was shut down by the courts twice already, had no signatures verified, and yet somehow found its way onto your referendum ballots. While you fight the courts against something you have already put to a referendum, you fight Albertans to keep a question off. Concentrating discriminatory questions onto an arduous and wasteful referendum places additional pressure on everyone, but particularly Elections Alberta who has already been underfunded and overlegislated by your government in the past. To paraphrase your Fi…

so… which is it? someone forgot to click a button to continue their health coverage in 2026? I don’t really enjoy being gaslit by my own govt and less so when it’s clear they have no idea how to run a province
“The government did not publicly announce the change. Workers only found out they were no longer eligible when they tried to register for coverage or renew their health cards.”“In a statement to CBC News, Alberta’s Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services said it has heard concerns from employers and workers about what it called a “premature decision” made within the department.

The government says it has now paused the change while it reviews the policy.”

in case you’re wondering what kind of replies you might get from the UCP govt, here’s Minister Boitchenko’s response re: taking away rights of youth using the notwithstanding clause the second, a reply to an email to the Justice Minister about the NWC used on teachers
Dear Mr. Capus,

Thank you for reaching out about your concerns surrounding Bill 9. As MLA for Drayton Valley – Devon, I would like to provide some contextual information to provide you with a response.

In December 2024, Alberta’s government passed legislation to preserve the choices of children and youth, improve access to health services and protect children, families, and parental involvement in the education system. Since passing this legislation, three lawsuits have been filed by activist organizations, with one injunction already in place.

Alberta’s government has been clear all along – we are prepared to use every legal and constitutional tool available to protect the health and well-being of children. If passed, Bill 9 the Protecting Alberta’s Children Statutes Amendment Act, will invoke the notwithstanding clause to:

preserve the future choices of children and youth
strengthen the role of parents as a child’s primary caregiver
ensure fairness and safety in amateur competitive sports.

Alberta’s United Conservative government will be unapologetic in our commitment to these principles. These laws will stand without further court delay or uncertainty. We cannot allow this legislation to be paused throughout lengthy court proceedings – potentially putting children at risk for years. The notwithstanding clause is meant to balance power between the courts and democratically elected governments. Albertans expect us to do this, and this is what our government will unapologetically defend. The notwithstanding clause is a legitimate tool that will ensure these protections for children stay in place.

Using notwithstanding clause is a necessary measure to ensure that laws safeguarding children’s health, education, and safety cannot be undone and that parents are fully involved in the major decisions affecting their children’s lives. It is a tool that is built into the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms for federal and provincial legislatures to use and reflect…Thank you for reaching out to the government of Alberta about teacher bargaining and Bill 2: the Back to School Act. It is our pleasure to respond.

We know many families, students, teachers, and school leaders were feeling stress and uncertainty about Alberta’s teacher negotiations.

The last proposal put on the table by the ATA demanded an additional $2 billion from government. This offer by the ATA did not present a path to resolving this dispute.

On October 16, 2025, the Provincial Bargaining and Compensation Office (PBCO) wrote to the Alberta Teachers’ Association and formally requested an agreement to end the strike and enter an enhanced mediation process. Negotiating would have continued with the ATA, the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), and a third-party mediator working together to come to an agreement. This would have ensured that students promptly returned to classrooms and that teachers returned to work. PBCO made this offer to the ATA because the union had not made a reasonable offer, and this ongoing strike was continuing to harm students. This deal would have meant teachers could bargain on better terms for their agreement, and our kids would have been in school weeks ago. Alberta’s government was trying to put kids first and bring an end to the strike.

However, the ATA said no.

We support our teachers and want the same things as teachers: more support for teachers, smaller class sizes, higher pay for teachers, and more classrooms. However, the strike went on too long, and we were extremely concerned about the impact of labour action on our kids.

Every day of the strike, students lost critical instructional time, routine, and support. It set back student learning and deepened achievement gaps that cannot be overlooked.

Our priority was student learning and supporting families through this challenging time. To prevent long-term irreparable damage to our kids and their education, the government legislated the teachers back to…

Minister Boitchenko,

It is my understanding that, as of last night, your provincial government has now used the nothwithstanding clause to restrict the rights of Alberta teachers, and by effect, all Albertans. In your mandate letter from the premier, she asks that you “ensure the full implementation of the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act using all available legal and constitutional means necessary.”

Does this include using the Nothwithstanding Clause?

The Fairness in Safety in Sport Act (Bill 29) is unconstitutional as it stands - I can’t imagine any court in Canada propping up a bill that actively discriminates against transgender, non-binary, intersex and gender diverse youth. It is also the antithesis to the findings of the International Olympic Committee’s 2021 “Framework on Fairness, Inclusion Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex Variations”, which advises sporting institutions to ensure that “athletes are not excluded solely on the basis of their transgender identity or sex variations.” Sports are full of natural advantages that biology provides, regardless of the genitalia someone was born with or how they identify; to legislate against that is to legislate against nature itself.

Lastly, I noticed your office phone number (780-427-3070) has disappeared from the government website. Is there a better way to contact you directly or are we not supposed to be able to contact UCP ministers by design?

Thanks,

Jon Capus

Email 2:

Hello,

It has been over two weeks now without a reply from the Ministry of Tourism & Sport. I will ask once more: does Minister Boitchenko plan on invoking the Notwithstanding Clause to uphold the "Fairness in Safety in Sport Act (Bill 29)"?

In that time, not only has Minister Boitchenko's direct phone number (780-427-3070) disappeared from the Alberta government website, it now seems like the email contact (ts.minister@gov.ab.ca) has also been removed.
