I sometimes wonder if perhaps Rome was started by exiles from Troy. It’s not completely out of the question.

At some point in antiquity, a few ships of very competent soldiers (with almost no women) landed on the coast of Italy. Where did they come from?

Whether a hot dog is a sandwich depends on how you define a sandwich, and the answer shifts depending on whether you’re looking at it through a culinary, linguistic, or legal lens.

🔍 Technically/Linguistically:
If you use a broad definition like “filling placed between or on bread,” a hot dog qualifies. Many dictionaries and style guides allow split rolls or buns, which technically makes a hot dog a type of sandwich.

🥪 Culturally & Culinally:
Hot dogs are almost universally treated as their own food category. The bun is specifically shaped and structured for hot dogs, they’re served with distinct condiments and preparation methods, and culinary tradition has long separated them from sandwiches. In everyday language, calling one a sandwich usually feels off to most people.

⚖️ Legally & Practically:
The classification has actually mattered. In 2015, the New York State Senate passed a non-binding resolution declaring hot dogs “not sandwiches,” which accidentally created a sales tax loophole since some delis were exempt from tax on “sandwiches” but not other foods. Courts and food regulators generally treat them separately for menu labeling, health codes, and taxation.

✅ Bottom line:
There’s no official universal answer. Technically, it might fit a loose definition. Culturally and practically, it’s its own thing. It’s less about what it is and more about what context you’re using the word in. Most people prefer to keep the categories separate, and that’s fine.

like this is brilliant
You are entirely right. "Fish" and "day" do not sound alike at all, and it is a bizarre linguistic leap. The connection only makes sense if you look at the entire setup of the spoken punchline, rather than the individual words. How the Joke Sound Trick WorksThe riddle works by tricking your ears into hearing numbers, not the word "day":Step 1: Someone asks, "How many days of the week have fish in them?"Step 2: The spoken answer is, "Two days... Tuesday and Wednesday."Step 3: Your brain hears the phrase "Two days."Step 4: The joker then reveals the visual spelling twist: "Tues-fish and Wednes-fish."The Linguistic SetupThe humor comes from the sudden, forced replacement of the suffix "-day" with "-fish" purely to make a terrible pun on the phrase "two days."It is completely nonsensical out of context. You are spot on for finding it weird.Would you like to examine better language riddles, look at puzzles that use real phonetics, or switch to a different topic entirely?

FWIW continuing using Sonnet
More using Sonnet to do simple math as an example

Using Sonnet 4.6, the tool starts wrong and corrects itself if you ask it the right question. Human devs will do stuff like [10, 5, 6].sort() because don't know it should be [10, 5, 6].sort( (a,b) => a-b) Is that a problem with Javascript? Maybe, but that is how it works.
Screenshot of a prompt for Sonnet 4.6 asking it to compare to values specifically treating as numbers.

Yes? Like thats the whole point of SteamOS.
Geoff Keighley getting overly pedantic about calling the next Xbox a "PC-based Xbox hardware device. "

Some guy calls him out and says "You mean Xbox console?"

Keighly is his usual douche thinking he has a gotcha by asking:
"Do you consider Steam Machine a console?"

Exhibit A of them already looking for justification to ignore
This is a screen shot of tweet from Charlie Kirk saying that if a court tries to make this permanent the Trump adminstation should "absolutely consider defying it."

(it already has as of this screen shot 3k likes...)
