Already I know I will have to read everything else Tawada has written, and that I will read this one again and find all sorts of new stuff in it.

Thank you Bethan Evans for finding me a new favourite author! Yoko Tawada’s Spontaneous Acts is a surrealist dreamscape drawing on the poetry of Paul Celan, a meditation on trauma, grief and loneliness, and a celebration of the power of art to connect us all.

I wrote about how great Swallow‘s Blow and its companion remix album Blowback are for Outsideleft before the reissue was even announced! The vinyl sold out pretty quickly so I was very happy to find a copy in Rough Trade today

Me listening to the Hollies for the first time, going that’s the one Radiohead nicked, that’s the one Steely Dan nabbed, Magnetic Fields took that one….

I have improved the “kinda chic” meme with Jonathan Aesthetics! Bands featured: Unrest, Dif Juz, Jellyfish, Magma

Unrest with the text “Kinda Jonathan Aesthetics to name yourself after a Henry Cow album and cover both King Crimson and the Crawling Chaos”

Dif Juz with the text “Kinda Jonathan Aesthetics to release an album and a handful of EPs of unclassifiae music then vanish”

Jellyfish with the text “Kinda Jonathan Aesthetics to dress like cartoon characters and record two perfect pop albums”

Magma with the text “Kinda Jonathan Aesthetics to invent an alien language for your multi-album SF saga”

A HUGE congratulations to @catamaroon.bsky.social for winning the Clarke Award! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - When There Are Wolves Again is the greatest sf novel of the past decade, and that was the most deserved Clarke Award win in recent memory

It's time again! Cis allies: if you can, please consider being chaff for us. Toilet hobbycops think like 10% of people are trans, and to overturn our segregation we need respectable cis people causing trouble on our behalf. Please wear a trans flag pin. Get in good trouble, as John Lewis put it.

All of the albums are great, but their final album Puzzles Like You, a gorgeous summery blissed out countrygaze powerpop album, might be my favourite, and stands comfortably next to the best Slowdive records.

Been making my way through the five Mojave 3 albums, which have been out of print forever so I didn’t know them at all. They’re a revelation. Turns out when you strip away the feedback, there’s no excuse for not recognising Neil Halstead as one of the greatest songwriters of his generation.

I have just discovered Scheer, an utterly brilliant alt metal Shoegaze powerpop band on 4AD. They basically sound like Swervedriver fronted by Dolores O’Riordan of the Cranberries. 10/10 no notes
