I am maybe a fifth of the way through Al Reynolds new SF noir novel Halcyon Years and its fun. The book really wears its influences on its sleeve. Though I'm still working on whyYuri Gagarin?

Cover art for Halcyon Years shows a man in a coat and hat walking away from us and into a distorted black and white cityscape.

Looking like a complete muppet. Christmas Eve, cool and pleasant, and 60 for a while longer. Hope you all have a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season and that I see you in 2025.

Katherine Addison's work is a treat, and The Goblin Emperor was terrific. I was fortunate enough to work on the related novella, The Orb of Cairado, which is coming from @subpress.bsky.social in January. You can pre-order! subterraneanpress.com/addison-tooc/

My friend Bill over at @subpress.bsky.social asks every Friday what they're reading. Well, it's the end of the year and I have Recommended Reading prep to do for @locusmag.bsky.social, so today's reading is Sofia Samatar's pretty remarkable novella, The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain.

What's it like getting older, they say? It's exactly like this. You still feel the same, there's still a lot there, but not everything works quite right. There's also a time when you realise it's raining and you should stop tucking things away.

The kind and generous Scott Edelman has a podcast, Eating the Fantastic. If you're careful to skip the upcoming episode with Gary and me, I'm sure all of the others are well worth your time. Check it out here: www.scottedelman.com/tag/eating-t...

Books of 2023. This incredible Booker long-listee is one of those SF novels that happen just outside the genre that we all need to read. Just remarkable. www.allenandunwin.com/browse/book/...

I've just heard Someone in Time has won the British Fantasy Award. I'm delighted, and so grateful to everyone who shares this award with me: Alix E. Harrow, Carrie Vaughn, Catherynne M. Valente, Elizabeth Hand, Ellen Klages, Jeffrey Ford, Lavanya Lakshminarayan.. 1/2

The two books from the peripheries of the genre to watch in 2023.

Cover art for Francis Spufford's novel, Cahokia Jazz, shows a black and white image of hands playing a piano.

Cover art for Martin MacInnes's In Ascension shows a figure floating in water.

I think there are synergies between these two fine 2023 SF/F novels.

2023 is shaping up a good year. Here are three of my favourite novels of the year so far, and three of the best debuts. All recommended.

Read a terrific review (yet to be published) of Knife Witch, which frankly sounds huge fun. The sort of book Liz Bourke or Tansy Rayner Roberts might love, I think. www.aqueductpress.com/books/978-1-6…
