The core issue seems to be that overloading a data point led to side effects. It seems that if they want to ask a new question, ie sex as assigned at birth, then that's exactly how they should do it. There are three distinct things to record, it seems.

Not sure that even if 100% of Europe stopped buying petroleum products would things improve. The majors would just exit the EU, leaving the EU with no subsequent leverage. Better would be normalizing full lifetime cost burdening, so they are forced to price their products "correctly".

But the system does nothing to constrain what structures and motivations are permitted, correct? Having a larger market and a larger share of it are typically advantageous. The problem isn't from all entities seeking unlimited growth, the problem is any doing so. Exactly like cells.

Do people submit to arxiv after acceptance at a peer reviewed outlet much now? Ever? For how many fields is a lifetime ban to submit a preprint to arxiv is just a lifetime ban with extra steps?

I'm not sure how likely it is. How likely is it that 12 coauthors all willfully submitted a manuscript without each confirming every citation to a platform with a strict policy against this? It seems odd to issue lifetime bans to individuals who did not personally submit the violating item.

In my hypothetical question, my PI has changed the citations after my review and sign off. Certainly you are not advocating that I be banned in such a situation? As others have commented, I (and every other coauthor) would have to use the appeal system to be divorced from that version of the paper.

What constitutes "signing your name as an author"? I have my name on a preprint, and I have total confidence in its citations, but I had no direct part in its submission. If my PI added slop before submission, I get banned?

Susceptibility artifacts are a major problem for the olfactory bulb in fMRI due to the sinuses. The ear canals affect some primary auditory areas as well, tho I believe to a lesser degree.
