Ours flickered at our hotel on the beach as well. Power has stayed on (so far). But elevators are out of service as a precaution.

For me, flying the Mars helicopter on Earth was similar to piloting a commercial drone with familiar controls and aerodynamics. But AeroVironment's @pomerantz.bsky.social explains it will be far more complicated when his company and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory send three SkyFall drones to Mars.

I had the opportunity to fly a Mars helicopter. Easy on Earth, but extremely challenging on a distant planet. That’s SkyFall.

I drove to JFTB Los Alamitos in a Nissan rental. My interviewee arrived in his own MiG-29. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman tells me he became a pilot because he thought it was the closest he’d come to realizing what he told his kindergarten teacher — that he wanted to become an astronaut.

Testing my Martian flying skills on an Earth version of the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter (shorter blades for thicker atmosphere on our home planet). NASA JPL is planning a future mission with a “SkyFall” maneuver to deploy three rotorcraft from a capsule descending through Mars atmosphere on parachute.

Heading to my next assignment to see SkyFall, the NASA rotorcraft that will investigate the climate and geology of Mars. If we were on a different social media site, I’d feel compelled to clarify that the geology seen in the picture is not the Red Planet, but California. But y’all are scientists.

✈️ Now on my flight to LA, the passenger next to me is trying to catch his sneezes in his nose without covering it. Now he just wiped it with his hand. 🦠

✈️ Boarding my connection to LA, the gate agent admonished me for stepping over the yellow wait line prematurely. I apologized and stepped back. But then the second gate agent got on the loudspeaker to remind passengers to wait behind the line until called. I feel foolish. 😔

✈️ My travel day has been a bit off. When my flight from Florida reached the gate in Atlanta, a woman rushed up from behind, placed her hands on my waist, and gently moved me to the side. “Sorry, I have a connecting flight.” We had arrived five minutes early.

Sunset over Atlanta as seen from my return flight this evening. A sprinkling of city lights on the ground, a small lake reflecting the dark blue sky, and brilliant colors of red and yellow on the western horizon.
