Incredibly clever of the people of #Iceland to decide not wanting to join the EU. It is much easier now for Trump to incorporate Iceland into his Großmannssucht plans. So smart, you guys.

#GloriaSteinem, the feminist crusader who galvanized the modern women’s movement, helping millions of women develop a sense of self-worth and gain a measure of equality at home, at work and in society at large, died on Wednesday at her home in Manhattan. She was 92. A truly great woman has left us.
Photo of Gloria Steinem laughing from her Instagram account.gloriasteinem

12 Std.

Yesterday, Gloria Steinem passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her. Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end.

Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard. Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves. Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor.

She spent her recent years doing the two things she loved most: being in community with others and writing. She has welcomed hundreds of guests into her living room for Talking Circles, a tradition she insisted will continue long after she is no longer with us. As Gloria wrote in her forthcoming book, 𝘈𝘯 𝘜𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦, “I have now lived for more than fifty years in this brownstone, in rooms that have witnessed lives before mine, and will know others after I am gone.” This book, along with her commitment to her home becoming a center for social justice movements, are among the many gifts Gloria has given the world with the hope they have ripple effects for generations to come. Gloria often quoted the adage: “The flap of a butterfly’s wing can change the weather hundreds of miles away.”

Gloria loved the tradition of lighting signal fires on hills to light the way to the other side of the mountain. Lighting your own candle for Gloria makes you part of this global and celestial community circle.

In lieu of flowers, Gloria has asked that those wishing to honor her with a gift, may make a donation to Gloria’s Foundation.

Here is the original report by Matt Bradley from @nbcnews.com on how they got beaten up by Israeli settler youths in the West Bank. The 51-year-old Palestinian woman was beaten unconscious! I am glad Matt and the others are okay, and the woman was discharged from hospital now. #Israel is criminal!

My colleague Matt Bradley from @nbcnews.com, who I know since our times in Cairo covering the Arab Spring, was attacked by terrorists (aka settlers) in the #WestBank while interviewing a 51-year-old Palestinian woman whose house was taken by the settlers. 4 young men beat them up. Criminal, #Israel!
Matt Bradley
@MattMcBradley
We’ve been covering settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank for years.

But yesterday, we found ourselves on the menu.

A group of masked settlers beat our team and pummelled the 51 year old woman we were interviewing unconscious.

We’re all ok now - and Aida is out of the hospital - but this is just one incident among an unprecedented surge in settler violence across the West Bank.

Here’s out story on yesterday’s attack on Sunday Today on @NBCNews

Talking of renaming #LakeOntario ...

PM of #Canada, Mark Carney, reacts to the idiocy of Trump, trying to rename #LakeOntario. Give it up, Donald.
Mark Carney on X:

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

Don't we all miss the times of kindergarten?
President Trump on Tuesday threatened to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, the latest in a stream of provocations he has hurled at Canada and its leaders as a trade war heats up.

“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America,” Mr. Trump wrote in a social media post, rationalizing the change because “we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer.”

Dolly Parton's best one-liners – the star in her own words

Dolly Parton was not only known for her music and film success – fans also came to admire her talent for zingy one-liners.

Here are some of her best, compiled by PA Media:

“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.”

“I look like a woman, but I think like a man. I’ve done business with men who think I’m as silly as I look. By the time they realise I’m not, I’ve got the money and gone.”

“It costs a lot of money to look this cheap.”

“My weaknesses have always been food and men – in that order.”

“You’ll never do a whole lot unless you’re brave enough to try.”

“If I see something saggin’, baggin’ or draggin’, I’m gonna have it nipped, tucked or sucked!”

“I was the first woman to burn my bra – it took the fire department four days to put it out.”

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”

“You gotta keep trying to find your niche and trying to fit into whatever slot that’s left for you or to make one of your own.”

“Leave something good in every day.”

"Since its origin 250 years ago ..."? You are not aware that Native Americans existed and America existed before (sic!) 250 years ago? America only started when white folks invaded the land, committed a genocide on the native population, stole the land and declared it theirs? That is the "origin of America" you so proudly speak of, nothing existed before which should be respected? Not one Native American to be seen in your video as having contributed to America! Not one! That is not by any chance just as white racist as all the other on the right-wing side? Unbelievable to anyone who knows the true story of America and the tragedy that you all do not want to speak about. The problem with you Americans, be you on the right or left, is that you all (sic) do not want to face the bitter reality that you did not create America. It existed before your ancestors invaded the land and killed its rightful occupants, forced them onto trails of tears and into reservations where they were left to starve and deprive. The State of California funded an explicit war of extermination against Native populations. Rural communities and committees paid rewards for the scalps of Native men, women and children. For a scalp of a Native American Boy, $10 were paid. For that of a Native American woman $30 and for a Native American man $50! Not worth remembering, right? Just the usual deadly racist brutality by white men. Nothing to see here. – If only all of you ever would have any shame, you would acknowledge that and care for Native Americans. But they don't even turn up in your version of history. They are non-existent to you all. And that even from Heather Cox Richardson, who has written about Wounded Knee (if only to talk about what went on amongst the whites that caused it), is shocking and shows what is wrong with America still today. The country was founded on brutal white racism and has not changed its character ever since. Or you would at least mention Native Americans with one word…

All that needs to be said about the #4thOfJuly.
The Red man was the true American. They have almost all gone, but will never be forgotten. The history of how they fought for their country is written in blood, a stain that time cannot grinde out. Their God was the sun, their church all outdoors. Their only book was nature and they knew all the pages.

“That,” she said, “is what it’s like to be Black in America.” All the WTF you need to know.
Once inside, we got chatting to a Black woman, who was out with her brother, celebrating a promotion with a few cocktails. I mention that she was Black because we started discussing cultural observations, and my German friend—in typically German bluntness—straight up asked her: “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but what’s it like to be Black in America?”

She paused. Then, she said this:

“I guess the best way to answer that question is to tell you a bit about my car. I’ve been fortunate to have been successful. I’ve got a good job. I work hard. I’m paid well. And I like cars. So, after I got one of my raises, I got myself a red Corvette—the kind of car that’s a status symbol, plenty of wow factor.”

She took a sip of her mint julep.

“But here’s the thing. Since I started driving it, I’ve been stopped five times by the police for apparently no reason. Every time, there’s some flimsy pretext, but in four of the five times, they’ve come up to the window, then asked the same question: ‘Ma’am, how can you afford this car?’ The insinuation, of course, is that I’ve stolen it.”

“So, you know what I’ve done? To make sure that I don’t have to reach for anything — in case they think I’m reaching for a weapon — I now drive around with my license and registration taped to my dashboard. But I also have printed out and taped my latest paycheck there, too, so I can just point to it when I get stopped, proving that I can afford a Corvette.”

“That,” she said, “is what it’s like to be Black in America.”

“This [ICEBlock] is an app that is publicly available to any iPhone user who wants to download it,” the network said in a statement. “There is nothing illegal about reporting the existence of this or any other app, nor does such reporting constitute promotion or other endorsement of the app by CNN.”
Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, said on Tuesday that she was “working with the Department of Justice” to see if the Trump administration could prosecute CNN for publishing an article about an app that allows users to send alerts about the presence of nearby immigration agents.“We’re going to actually go after them and prosecute them,” Ms. Noem told reporters at an appearance with President Trump in Florida.

CNN said the article was a straightforward report on the existence of the app, called ICEBlock.

“This is an app that is publicly available to any iPhone user who wants to download it,” the network said in a statement. “There is nothing illegal about reporting the existence of this or any other app, nor does such reporting constitute promotion or other endorsement of the app by CNN.”

Allies of Mr. Trump, including the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, have criticized CNN after the online article was published on Monday.

Last week, Mr. Trump threatened to sue CNN and The New York Times for publishing articles about a preliminary intelligence report on the American attack on Iran, the conclusions of which ran counter to the president’s assertion that Iran’s nuclear program had been “obliterated.”

"It's a killing field," one soldier said. "Where I was stationed, between one and five people were killed every day. They're treated like a hostile force – no crowd-control measures, no tear gas – just live fire with everything imaginable: heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, mortars." #Gaza
Title photo: Breaking the Silence - "It's a killing field" - Soldiers' Testimonies from the GHF distribution sitesOver the past few weeks, we’ve seen report after report, video after video, showing Palestinians in Gaza being shot at while trying to reach aid centers. While simply trying to feed themselves and their families.
Now, Haaretz has revealed that soldiers were instructed by their commanders to fire at crowds near the GHF aid distribution centers to drive them away, even when it was clear those crowds posed no threat. Here’s how the soldiers described the horrific scenes:
"It's a killing field," one soldier said. "Where I was stationed, between one and five people were killed every day. They're treated like a hostile force – no crowd-control measures, no tear gas – just live fire with everything imaginable: heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, mortars. Then, once the center opens, the shooting stops, and they know they can approach. Our form of communication is gunfire."
"I'm not aware of a single instance of return fire. There's no enemy, no weapons."
"Technically, it's supposed to be warning fire – either to push people back or stop them from advancing (...) but lately, firing shells has just become standard practice. Every time we fire, there are casualties and deaths, and when someone asks why a shell is necessary, there's never a good answer. Sometimes, merely asking the question annoys the commanders."
"You know it's not right. You feel it's not right – that the commanders here are taking the law into their own hands. But Gaza is a parallel universe. You move on quickly. The truth is, most people don't even stop to think about it."
"When we asked why they opened fire, we were told it was an order from above and that the civilians had posed a threat to the troops. I can say with certainty that the people were not close to the forces and did not endanger them. It was pointless – they were just killed, for nothing. This thing called killing innocent people – it's been normalized. We were constantly told there are no noncombatants in Gaza, and apparently that messa…

The Harvard University researcher and Russia-born scientist who spent months in Ice custody after being accused of smuggling frog embryos into the US now faces additional criminal charges.

A federal grand jury indicted Kseniia Petrova, a cancer researcher for Harvard Medical School, on Wednesday on one count of concealment of a material fact, one count of false statement and one count of smuggling goods into the United States, the Associated Press reports.

She was returning from a vacation earlier this year in France, where she had stopped at a lab specializing in splicing superfine sections of frog embryos to obtain a package of samples for research. She was questioned about the samples while passing through a US Customs and Border Protection checkpoint at Boston Logan international airport, and told after an interrogation that her visa was being canceled.

Federal officials accused her of lying about “carrying substances” into the country and alleged that she planned to smuggle the embryos through customs without declaring them. Petrova has said she didn’t realize the items needed to be declared.

Petrova faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted of smuggling and a sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on the charges of concealment of material fact and false statements.

Dear #USA, could you explain to us, the rest of the world, why your so called 'President' is not in a mental asylum, where he belongs? Asking for a friend.
BREAKING NEWS…I was shocked to hear that the State of Israel, which has just had one of its Greatest Moments in History, and is strongly led by Bibi Netanyahu, is continuing its ridiculous Witch Hunt against their Great War Time Prime Minister! Bibi and I just went through HELL together, fighting a very tough and brilliant longtime enemy of Israel, Iran, and Bibi could not have been better, sharper, or stronger in his LOVE for the incredible Holy Land. Anybody else would have suffered losses, embarrassment, and chaos! Bibi Netanyahu was a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel, and the result was something that nobody thought was possible, a complete elimination of potentially one of the biggest and most powerful Nuclear Weapons anywhere in the World, and it was going to happen, SOON! We were fighting, literally, for the Survival of Israel, and there is nobody in Israel’s History that fought harder or more competently than Bibi Netanyahu. Despite all of this, I just learned that Bibi has been summoned to Court on Monday for the continuation of this long running, (He has been going through this “Horror Show” since May of 2020 – Unheard of! This is the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has ever been on trial.), politically motivated case, “concerning cigars, a Bugs Bunny doll, and numerous other unfair charges” in order to do him great harm. Such a WITCH HUNT, for a man who has given so much, is unthinkable to me. He deserves much better than this, and so does the State of Israel. Bibi Netanyahu’s trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State. Perhaps there is no one that I know who could have worked in better harmony with the President of the United States, ME, than Bibi Netanyahu. It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu. THIS TRAVESTY OF “JUSTICE” CAN NOT BE ALLOWED!

THE DEATH OF INTERNATIONAL LAW "Whether genocide, war of aggression or occupation – in the end, it is not what is right that counts, but who wants it. The idea of international law is in fact dependent on the powerful playing along. If they do not, the violation remains without consequence." This!
Conflict between Iran and Israel
The death of international law
Guest commentary by Mina Jawad
International law is effectively dependent on what those in power want. The despots of the world gratefully accept this double standard.

Following Israel's attack on Iran on the night of 13 June 2025 – officially with the aim of preventing Iran from building a nuclear bomb – the fighting continues unabated. Israel's Western allies, led by the United States, defend the action as a preventive measure. Donald Trump's vague announcement that he would make a decision on possible military intervention within two weeks turned into a fait accompli after just two days: Israel's war of aggression was followed by the United States' attack on Iran, which violated international law.
The language used by Trump and US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth in announcing the attack is on a par with Orwellian newspeak and the propaganda of autocratic regimes: the glorification of Trump's supposed genius in bringing Iran's nuclear programme to its knees – and the invocation of patriotic heroism.
Calling on Iran to choose peace now is implausible. Iran had a valid nuclear agreement with the US and Europe, which Trump unilaterally terminated during his first term in office in 2018, rendering it effectively useless – torpedoed by the power of US sanctions.
The fact that Israel bombed Iran in the midst of the latest ongoing negotiations with the US – talks that began in April 2025 with Oman acting as mediator and aimed at a possible return to a nuclear agreement – and that a week later the US attacked Iranian nuclear facilities while ‘de-escalation’ talks with Europe were still ongoing, marks the end of all diplomatic reason. The ongoing attempt by European politicians to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table seems like a calculated act of political self-deception.International law is a paper tiger
It no longer matters how much the ‘West of values’ tries to interpret the attacks as peacekeeping measures. For it is no longer just about Iran and a still unproven nuclear threat. The signal to the global world order is clear: either you eat – or you are eaten. Diplomacy is dead, international law is a paper tiger.
The death of international law follows its long-criticised weakness. The UN has never been more than a forum where equality and a voice are merely staged. The UN Security Council, with its veto power, is the institutionalised veto against anything that does not serve the interests of the powerful. Every resolution, every attempt to act internationally, stands or falls with the unanimity of the five permanent members.
Not only today, but even in 1945, it was never about equality between states, but about securing a post-war order. And to this day, these veto powers must agree if anything is to happen at all. And the rest of the international community can only watch as interests neutralise each other.
The UN cannot therefore enforce any rights because it is dependent on the political will of the permanent members of the Security Council. Since its inception, it has hardly been able to prevent any wars. The International Court of Justice does not fare much better. What good are findings by a court that takes years to establish facts that have long since been established – and then cannot even enforce the law?
This applies not least to the ongoing proceedings concerning a possible violation of the Genocide Convention by Israel. What good does it do the more than 50,000 people already killed in Gaza if, in the end, ‘only’ mass war crimes are found to have been committed?
Whether genocide, war of aggression or occupation – in the end, it is not what is right that counts, but who wants it. The idea of international law is in fact dependent on the powerful playing along. If they do not, the violation of international law remai…The mask slips
Israel's indignant reaction to the arrest warrant against Netanyahu and its call on the ‘civilised nations of the world’ not to enforce the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants is nothing less than a clear sign of the actual state of affairs – namely, that ‘Western’ actors do not belong in the dock. And [German chancellor] Friedrich Merz's invitation to Netanyahu despite the arrest warrant is yet another example of how international law only applies to the weak.
In a world where might makes right, no one can seriously be expected to choose the fate of the weaker. Those who already have nuclear bombs will certainly not give them up. Those who did not yet have them or want them can no longer be accused of striving for them. This applies not only to Iran, but to everyone. Especially in the entire Global South.
There is much to suggest that the statements made by Chancellor Merz, who described Israel's actions as necessary ‘dirty work’ for the ‘West’, were not a slip of the tongue, but rather the dropping of the last mask. The claim to moral superiority exists alongside the fact that power politics beyond the rule of law and international law has always been the norm. The despots of the world gratefully accept this double standard.
The binding nature of international law is finally a thing of the past when it is once again undermined by those who constantly demand compliance with it. And anyone who believes that this supposed ‘war of civilisations’ will bring anything close to peace and security fails to recognise that, since today at the latest, we live in a world in which we have all become less secure.

Vance lies, Rubio lies, Hegseth lies – and all to frantically try to defend the indefensible so that their daddy won't be cross with them. The guilty conscience is written all over their faces. And the dumbness of course.

Iran’s parliament has reportedly approved the closing of the key strait of Hormuz shipping lane.

Reuters reported Iran’s supreme national security council will make the final decision on the move, which could hamstring global trade by shutting the narrow passage between Iran and Oman.

The decision to close the strait, through which about 20% of global oil and gas demand flows, is not yet final.

However according to Reuters, lawmaker and Revolutionary Guards Commander Esmail Kosari told the Young Journalist Club on Sunday that doing so is on the agenda and “will be done whenever necessary.”

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it was assessing the threat to US commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, near Iran, as “high”.
