Well, then arrest and prosecute the people responsible for the crimes their software causes. The idea that no humans are responsible because 'AI is beyond human control' is at the root of the lack of regulation. Seize the data centers used in the crimes.

Tangentially I am baffled at the continued lack of engagement with qualitative methods in the network field. Particularly when researching complex mental health problems and developmental processes. Longitudinal, qualitative research does something of central value for network thinking. IMHO.

We must simply keep the owners of these machines responsible. Just like with any other machine. If I point my car at a red light, put it in drive and jump out, I'm still responsible for the collision my car causes. Placing responsibility with AI-machines must work the same way.

My skepticism runs deeper, science is IMO a social acitivity at its core, and findings need to be anchored in accountability. If other researchers disagree on a finding, an open discussion about the process and choices made must be possible. Other issues too, but this is a whopper, re: 'AI'.

That makes sense. Personally what worries me most is loss of critical thinking skills on a societal scale. In the scientific field I know, 'AI' does little good. Not against e.g. automated transcription per se, but it does change work flows in unintended ways and often only solves tasks 'somewhat'.

2nd recommendation: Emily M. Bender, also on Bsky, looks critically at AI from a linguistics perspective, it is a hard but fair look at AI. This one is good, just scroll by the two dry introductions :-) One central point is how the AI discourse hides and devalues human work.

Strongly recommend following Cory Doctorow and his centaur vs reverse-centaur distinction, meaning: Does AI make you its useless slave, or do you use AI for particular tasks where it is truly useful. But always remember never ever to trust an AI-company-CEO, and use quotation marks around 'AI'.
