Yes, I was only supposed to here for 2 weeks but that's overrun by 19 and 1/2 years now!

Some insights for writers about the publishing process (and why going the DIY route is not easier, even if can be quicker) based on interviews Kevin Duffy and I did with Dr Sally Brown at the Bradford Literary Festival a couple of weeks back.

I had 2 teachers for English A-Level. I was a straight A student but one insisted my predicted grade be B/C because she’d told me to speak up in class more and I hadn’t done so. Without a predicted A, I couldn’t apply to Warwick or York. I’m still in contact with the other teacher.

Next Tuesday I'm leading this online workshop with @thelitconsultancy.bsky.social looking especially at reframing thinking of 'formulaic' writing in terms of understanding, meeting and then exceeding reader expectations. We'll be covering goal-led plots, proactive main characters, and more.

Today @saperebooks.bsky.social publish the first in my salty new series of maritime adventures, Tenacious. If you can imagine "24" set on a ship in the 1770s, you'll understand what I was aiming for... For a limited time the ebook version is at a pretty nifty discount too: getbook.at/TenaciousNB

It's fair to say that seeing Rob Reiner's Stand By Me aged 12 (the perfect age for it, though I understand it differently now) set me on course to being a writer. Before, I just wanted to be a detective or time traveller. Afterwards I realised being a writer meant I could be all the things. Sad day.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you! Yes, I think there were a lot of people trying to book slots so hopefully this is a sign they can expand the offering to meet demand in future years.

Very pleased to be mentoring @natrwrites.bsky.social this year. Thank you to everyone who submitted - the quality was very high across the board and I’ll be getting back to a few more people I was seriously considering in due course.

For anyone interested in becoming an editor, Writers & Artists are running this panel later this month in conjunction with @bloomsburynews.bsky.social. I will unfortunately be dispelling the myth all we do is sit around, read books and drink wine. Maybe. www.writersandartists.co.uk/events-and-c...

Yes, there does come a point when ranting simply becomes venting. I've been in publishing 18 years and it's more diverse than when I started, but the key word there is "more" rather than "diverse", and now it does feel as if things are starting to slowly slide backwards for the first time.

Even being with a big publisher wouldn’t necessarily help. Hosting events has underlying costs that means bookshops will turn down most requests unless they’re sure they can make a sizeable return. They’re often cautious in their expectations, which can be frustrating.

Reading this makes me think of the jobbing actors who recorded my audiobooks. I wonder what they would make of where things seem to be heading.
