Seems bad.
The FCC is letting Paramount sell indirect ownership stakes to “some of the most repressive governments in the world,” FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez, the only Democrat on the commission, said yesterday. “An investment this large in one of America’s biggest media companies doesn’t just buy equity, it secures influence over what gets said and what gets made.”

Um.
And so the concern is that they can act on their own, essentially. And that was highlighted just yesterday, when OpenAI said that two of its models during training had essentially broken out of their cage, gone onto the Internet, and hacked another company which is essentially an A.I. model library.

Paul Krugman summed it up well in a recent piece.
It has been clear for a long time, to anyone willing to see, that the people running the federal government — Trump, Miller, Noem, Bovino and more — are monsters. It has been equally obvious that ICE and the Border Patrol are now filled with sadistic thugs. Yet many people — almost the entire GOP, everyone serving in the Trump administration, some Democrats, a significant part of the media — were too cowardly to admit the obvious.

Mark Carney's speech was one for the history books. Sweeping in its perspective and urgent in its candor. This statement was especially striking:
"We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false. That the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient. That trade rules were enforced asymmetrically. And we knew that international law applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused or the victim."
- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney

“Pity the Nation” by Lawrence Ferlinghetti (After Khalil Gibran) 2007
“PITY THE NATION”
Lawrence Ferlinghetti (After Khalil Gibran) 2007

Pity the nation whose people are sheep
And whose shepherds mislead them
Pity the nation whose leaders are liars
Whose sages are silenced
And whose bigots haunt the airwaves
Pity the nation that raises not its voice
Except to praise conquerors
And acclaim the bully as hero
And aims to rule the world
By force and by torture
Pity the nation that knows
No other language but its own
And no other culture but its own
Pity the nation whose breath is money
And sleeps the sleep of the too well fed
Pity the nation oh pity the people
who allow their rights to erode
and their freedoms to be washed away
My country, tears of thee
Sweet land of liberty!

Great year in review from Terry Moran, including this observation regarding the decline of corporate news media and the rise of independent voices. (Full story: terrymoran.substack.com/p/year-in-re...)
The new media is messy, chaotic and sometimes misinformed. But it cannot be denied that this new journalism is more democratic, more diverse, and less captured by corporate interests pretending that “objectivity” means silence about reality. The future is here.

"The Storm" by Mary Oliver. I always think of this little gem as we head into colder weather. First frost on the way tonight. I'm leaning into it.🤍
The Storm
A poem by Mary Oliver

Now through the white orchard my little dog
romps, breaking the new snow
with wild feet.
Running here running there, excited,
hardly able to stop, he leaps, he spins
until the white snow is written upon
in large, exuberant letters,
a long sentence, expressing
the pleasures of the body in this world.
Oh, I could not have said it better myself.

"Incantation of the First Order" by Rita Dove. This poem resonates. 🖤
Listen, no one signed up for this lullaby.
No bleeped sheep or rosebuds or twitching stars
will diminish the fear or save you from waking

into the same day you dreamed of leaving—
mockingbird on back order, morning bells
stuck on snooze—so you might as well

get up and at it, pestilence be damned.
Peril and risk having become relative,
I’ll try to couch this in positive terms:

Never! is the word of last resorts,
Always! the fanatic’s rallying cry.
To those inclined toward kindness, I say

Come out of your houses drumming. All others,
beware: I have discarded my smile but not my teeth.

Yeah, I was just reading up on it a couple days ago.
Chris Armitage writes:
Spain might be the worst because everyone saw it coming. Three years of escalating fascist violence. Actual assassination attempts. Then in 1936, Franco and his generals launch a straight-up military coup. The Spanish Republic begged for help. France said "not our problem." Britain said "both sides are bad." America declared neutrality. The result? Franco ruled for 39 years. He died peacefully in his bed in 1975. They're still finding mass graves in Spain. Still. In 2025.
