The list of companies with whom I will never do business because of abysmal customer service gets one longer any time I have to interact with a company.

Noticed some good in my dog's eye. 12 hrs later I'm still awake in the veterinary emergency waiting room. Last week she had a spindle cell tumor removed. Wish Sadie good luck, and hope she keeps both eyes. If you make it to 16 in December I am buying you a car.

Before everyone studied to lofi beats, they over-extrapolated from not-very reproducible results in a study of 36 college students to insist that everyone study while listening to Mozart. This is the true reason Millenials killed classical music

Due to inflation, today the 6 million dollar man would cost 45 million. The contract would be granted in a no-bid contract to a start-up affiliated with Kushner that had never done bionics before, and he would die on the table because they used a MAHA grifter surgeon

It’s absolutely incredible that one of the largest Japanese-run Go servers, which has been running since 1992, is still accessed entirely via Telnet. And while most players use GUI clients that use Telnet under the hood, you can still connect manually and get ASCII graphics streamed to you

The biggest shift in the US had been coal to natural gas. That drove most of the emissions reduction from 2005 peak. Eventually the economics of solar +storage will supplant most of that. Off-season storage remains a technology challenge though.

www.eia.gov/electricity/... In 2025 295,671 thousand mega watt hours of energy were generated at utility scale solar in the US. (Up from 36,054 in 2016). Small scale solar (incl rooftop) 93,148 in 2025 up from 18,182 in 2016. 8.4 fold growth vs 5.1 fold growth

It's obviously better if everyone can make their own electricity without depending on external utilities. However, even if every house and medium/large building had solar panels you'd be generating about 40% of energy needs. Still need utility scale in the mix.

Jonathan Maxerman Berman, PhD @jonathanberman.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
It isn't really a counter. Germany has a larger fraction of small scale/rooftop solar to utility scale than for example the US does. But if you got rid of their solar plants that would be like half their solar capacity.

Jonathan Maxerman Berman, PhD @jonathanberman.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
It would cost 3x as much to install and thus it would take longer to decarbonize.

Jonathan Maxerman Berman, PhD @jonathanberman.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
Us has been building out utility scale solar. It's a bigger part of our solar mix than Germany's. The biggest bottleneck, I think is permitting for transmission lines

Jonathan Maxerman Berman, PhD @jonathanberman.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
I've been discovering that a shocking fraction of people don't really have a concept of the scale of solar projects that are needed to generate the energy we need. Utility scale solar is a good thing in addition to local panels.

Clearly there are benefits to parking canopies, but I'm answering the question why every charge station doesn't have this: The costs are comparatively high, and it isn't going to power the chargers on its own.
000
Jonathan Maxerman Berman, PhD @jonathanberman.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Suppose you invest 1M in a 1 MW solar farm, vs 3.5 M in 1 MW of canopies. It would take more than panel lifetime for a 7% transmission loss to make up the 2.5M difference. Plus advantages of putting panels where there's high solar resource, land availability, better capacity factor, etc.
200
Jonathan Maxerman Berman, PhD @jonathanberman.bsky.social · 13/04/2026
The lowest estimate I can find for a solar parking canopy of any kind is above $3 per watt. Even at $2.5 /watt that wouldn't be as cost effective. By all means find an estimate that puts it at less than double the cost of utility scale solar.

Jonathan Maxerman Berman, PhD @jonathanberman.bsky.social · 13/04/2026
The area where utility scale solar becomes bottlenecked often is permitting for transmission lines. France is actually a bit better off there. Delays seem to be closer to 2-4 years vs 10-15 years in the US

Jonathan Maxerman Berman, PhD @jonathanberman.bsky.social · 13/04/2026
That's useful if you want to know how many cars you could charge in a day, or how many energy you could add to the grid. Feel free to do that arithmetic

Jonathan Maxerman Berman, PhD @jonathanberman.bsky.social · 13/04/2026
In both cases the investment will pay for itself eventually through electricity production, and be good for the environment through reduced need for carbon fueld, so building these out is a good thing, just not the most efficient way to add capacity
