Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 21/06/2026The most recent episode of @scwpod.bsky.social made me aware of The Secret Life of Circuits by @lcamtuf.coredump.cx which I haven't acquired yet but assume will be excellent given their other work. 030

Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 02/01/2026I would start by measuring latency separately for: downloading, gunzipping, and untarring, just to get an idea for where the bottleneck is. 020
Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 02/01/2026You could also preprocess them and create an index to make this not speculative, but that only makes sense if you need to extract the same files more than once. 100

Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 02/01/2026One thing I'd try to get a baseline (which isn't native rust but is very cool) is rapidgzip. Will burn more CPU but can speculatively decompress to get parallelism where there's usually none. Do you have control over the files or are they third party? 120
Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 01/01/2026Do you actually need to unpack to disk or do you just need random access to the file contents? You can avoid a lot of i/o by indexing the tar file and jumping around it. 100
Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 01/01/2026What kind of throughput are you getting now? Are these on a local disk or are you downloading from somewhere? Do you have any CPU to spare? 130

Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 23/11/2025Can confirm I paid ~$35 for popcorn, drink, and candy across the lake. I paid about $5 more for the Wicked popcorn tin, so this math works out. 130
Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 17/11/2025Right now I can tell it it passed or failed based on the status, but we use different exit codes to indicate different types of failures, and I would love access to that info without having to scrape logs 🙏 000
Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 17/11/2025I wonder if I could bribe @steren.fr to expose exit codes on cloud run jobs 🤔 110

Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 25/08/2025There must be a sweet spot for most applications somewhere between synchronous=NORMAL sqlite and Spanner right? :) People have been doing a lot of cool stuff with sqlite recently and I want to believe in it. 110
Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 24/08/2025Yeah that makes sense to me, I would just assume the default risk appetite is as close to zero as possible. 220
Jon Johnson @jon.dag.dev · 24/08/2025> Would anyone actually expect a WAL to be fsync'd on every request? I think I would! Can you help me understand why I shouldn't? Durability of transactions seems important but maybe I should be writing applications that assume transactions could be rolled back if the machine crashes? 120
