I only stood these cases on end like this to allow the covers to dry properly post-waxing, I did not intend for them to look like an ancient marine creature, and yet…
a couple dozen book cases/covers, arranged on end on a dark wood table, one behind the other, closely but without touching; the nestled pattern tapers towards the tail, making the whole arrangement look somewhat like a trilobite, or maybe a giant isopod, or some other multi-segmented crustacean…

though the wax is only to be applied very gently, in small circular motions [wax on… wax off], doing so over so many covers has worn a hole in the cloth, which is of course better than if it had worn a hole in the book; so that’s good, at least as an inadvertent test of the book’s robustness…
close up of pink microfibre cloth with a ‘dirty’ area at one corner from where the wax has been applied (and as such has caught in the fibres) in the centre of which is a small ragged hole; rough texture of artwork and corner of wax pot also visible

one issue with using relief printing for covers is that inked art of this sort is not usually meant to be handled, whereas books most certainly are the answer: a very fine layer of archival wax (should protect the book from, say, imperceptiblly damp fingertips, though not from, say, bath water)
handprinted cover art on an unbooked book case/cover being waxed, with various other oddments visible: a pink microfibre cloth, the wax pot + lid, a watch, a pencil, an eraser, Bas Jan, several curls of greaseproof paper

all paper covers on and cases stacked but, something, hmm… something is missing here
a stack of twenty-five (or so) handmade books cases, stacked flat, with black corners and middles showing, as well as the repeating pattern of the edges, predominantly in blues and greysthe same stack of cases (hard covers) but from a different angle, centred, showing the gap through the folded spines

adding hand-printed paper sides this can be tricky as the moisture in the glue seeps into the paper and re-wets the ink, so you have to be very careful not to smear/smudge the artwork when pressing the paper flat
mostly blue hand-printed paper sides being added to the boards of a book being bound, overlapping slightly the black buckram on spine and corners; (also visible: steel ruler, stanley knife, glue pot & brush, off cuts, dog bowl, dog)the case face down, showing inner bare boards and flaps/tabs of cover to be secured over edges the glued down tabs of one cornerthe finished case, standing on end; essentially the book without its pages

some folk really like their books with ribbons some folk really loathe them… what’s the thinking there, I wonder

all the cases folded, just awaiting cover art… and the book itself, of course
twenty five cases, standing in a row, black buckram on spine and corners, but with bare board sides; supported at either end by small stacks of some of the book blocks waiting to go in them

haven’t done this sort of sewing for many years; thought I’d try it again and yet… it’ll be glued over, mulled over, and then completely hidden by the cover looks pretty though

not very good pictures these, and not really book-related, except that from where I work I’ve been watching (for the last week or so) this woodpecker feed his two children, with the juveniles chirping noisily all the while (last picture wonky only in order to get all three birds in single frame)
adult woodpecker leans down from peanut feeder to pass food to his child who is clinging to the feeder-polewoodpecker joins his other baby on trunk of cherry treewoodpecker turns and feed baby on cherry trunka wider image (mostly hedge) but showing one baby woodpecker near the feeder being fed while the other waits on the tree

yet another stage in making the book where precision is vital; even half a millimetre off here will skew the hinges, and indeed the spine

boards don’t cut themselves, alas [which is to say: if anyone can think how I can cut these boards more efficiently (that is, in less than ten cuts) do please let me know]

some of the stages in making the book blocks: firstly how the pages start out (printed in royal octavo), before being folded, punched, sewn, then clamped and glued
two large printed sheets with eight book pages per side, showing the three folds needed to create each signaturethe folded signatures, gathered and punched, with end papers added (plus the awl)mid-sewing on one of the book blocks, with added linen tape, and dogthe spines of several book blocks, all tightly sewn, and clamped in twos and threes, awaiting the glue brush

they don’t serve any great structural purpose in the making of the book, merely decorative, but I do like making headbands for these I use matka silk, which gives a good sheen and texture just a little detail to cap each spine, that’s all
narrow strips of matka silk in gold and brown, with glue brushthe strips of silk now with a simple string core glued in and pressed to make a ridgelittle piles of trimmed headbands in gold, brown, blue, black and pink; with points of folder and scalpel nosing in

while waiting for various things to properly dry I used up various oddments to make two notebooks a bit garish, perhaps, but at least I won’t lose them
some greyboard offcuts, black card (folded for spine), bone, string, pencilfully covering the boards with yolk yellow buckrama test print of red lines on green card, cut into specific shapes for use as book sidestwo small notebooks (approx A7) one fully bound in yellow, the other half-bound in peach linen, with lime green sides, patterned in red

In the drying room… not even half of those I mean to do, 25copies in all; may not seem like many, but it sure does take a while
some hand-printed covers, front and back, laid out to dry, the edges of each sheet slightly curling

and here are some of the previous sheets with the words now printed into the spaces; these will then be trimmed and fixed to cases half-bound in cloth… when those are themselves made — but still a lot to do before then
relief-printed book covers (sans book) with title [Out, Leviathan!] and author name [J.O.MORGAN] bordered by blue-black stonelike patterns

some of the progress on the main title front cover plate from last few days; always looks a bit scrappy mid-cut, especially with the fiddly bits, but gets a little smoother later
relief cut in blue vinyl showing the words “Out, Leviathan!” but backwardsmore has been cut away around the title and some of the author name is now showing below, plus wood-handled gougemuch wider gouges now, resting atop plate with all letters clear and sharp, and only border remaining (soon to be removed)most of border gone, replaced with wide-grooved blank/black space (the border itself is on a separate plate, shown previously)

and here’s the plate all inked up, plus the first lot of prints; coverage a little patchy in places because of the paper texture, but overall… okay… I hope

progress with one of the new book’s front cover plates as to what words might eventually go in the gaps… anyone want to guess? answers on a postcard
cover design pencilled onto a sheet of blue vinyl with initial fine cuts made with a wooden-handled gougeinitial outline cuts widened and inner details addedmost of the plate finished with a much wider gouge (the tip of which is also shown) leaving only a sort of ragged island of blue vinyl still to be cleared, for now bordered by the black underlayera top down view of the finished relief plate: what seem like contour lines or perhaps veins in rock surround rough-edged blank (black) areas where the words will go, eventually

final design for rear cover transferred by hand to back plate as a mirror image — took a lot longer than one might expect; it‘s very dizzying looking at these sorts of close wavy lines for extended periods
swirly wavy lines in pencil on plain paper under a broad grid of fine red linesthe same design pencilled in reverse onto a greenish vinyl plate, tilted so that the graphite looks silver in the light

pro-bookbinding tip: following the careful application of beeswax it is vital to keep any newly waxed thread both near at hand and tangle-free
a small fairly fresh bar of beeswax with friction-grooves where linen thread has been pulled through (background: black dog at rest; not needed for this part of the process)the soft-furred curve of a dog’s long muzzle is the perfect perch upon which to hang thread prior to sewing(understandably the dog soon begins to question for how long she will have to maintain such a position)

rocks, contours, oysters? who can say; a couple of test cuts/prints for a new cover design; the close lines in each pattern create a motion illusion if viewed at the right distance
a test print in red ink of several irregular shapes within which are many negative untouching linesa test print in blue ink of many wavy lines that look a little like contours except they differ in their thickness at certain points

test printing on very thick (320 gram) cotton rag paper; the texture is too deep to get full coverage in a print, but the building up of ink layers creates a good effect by the end
base layer rectangles of purplish ink (front and back)second layers: round “egg” shapes for rear cover; egg “halo” for front; in dark purpleaddition of “beetle” name for rear panel; and plain oval shape for front; in dark pinklast layer, front only: the title in black, creating an abstract face shape with the ovals behind it
