To be fair, they are a bunch of idiots

Exactly what I thought!

"Malicious treachery" expresses it perfectly

One reason for not getting my DNA analysed (apart from data privacy) is the fear that I might not have any neanderthal at all, which would be a huge disappointment

Isn't Braverman a Buddhist, anyway?

And not too bright, if they didn't expect to be apprehended beside a US air base. Though on the other hand, I think the woman who reported it didn't get any reply when she called the base, obviously all in bed at that time

Not exactly innocent, but obviously nothing to do with terrorism, or they wouldn't be out on bail

They, and their followers, ignore the "proven wrong" bit. They've added to their narrative

You surely can't be suggesting that Trump isn't telling the truth?

When has he been seen in Parliament at all? If Reform are using "the boats" at every opportunity it's because they have no other policies that don't involve enriching their donors

I don't think they'll have much of a problem in ascertaining in whose territorial waters it took place. Apart from satellite technology, which seems able to locate every daisy on your lawn, it wasn't exactly a clandestine event

Is it not just straightforward criminal damage, and not giving the police his phone PIN?

Did they seize the camera? If so could the location of the recording be ascertained?

Nonetheless, I'm not happy about people being prosecuted or not for political reasons, or the CPS being leaned on by the Home Secretary (looking back with a shudder at some who've had the job). The CPS should be basing its decisions on what the law is and what can be proved

Jo Lonergan @joml.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Isn't it the CPS who decide what people will be charged with?

Is that not like the Eye adding "allegedly" to thwart Messrs Sue Grabbit & Runne?

As I remember Euston it has huge ad screens that dwarf the actual information. My real beef with London stations is that they hoard platform info until the last minute. Here in Switzerland you just find that on your mobile app, then as stations are open you just go to the platform when it suits you

I like Marylebone. Human scaled, and anyway if I'm passing through I'll be on my way to Stratford upon Avon

I'm not talking about hanging Nazis, my only point was that capital punishment is not a deterrent - to any criminal- because they don't expect to get caught
000
Jo Lonergan @joml.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
No, I am talking about the deterrent effects of capital punishment, with a historical example of why it doesn't work, whatever the crime may be
210
Jo Lonergan @joml.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
I was referring to the non-deterrent effects of capital punishment.

I think the best deterrent to crime is a high probablity of getting caught. After all, when pickpockets were publically hanged, other pickpockets would work the crowd, taking advantage of their being distracted by the spectacle. In my opinion it's simply wrong to kill anybody in cold blood

Not to Farage's supporters

Jo Lonergan @joml.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Logical, if you believe that executing people is a deterrent to crime

Jo Lonergan @joml.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Actually it would be quite funny to see his reaction if they did give one of the Reform crew a peerage, only not Farage.

France as we know it didn't exist, except for a bit round Paris (which I suppose is why we still have the Île-de-France). The same goes, of course, for Germany and Italy. The Normans were basically Vikings (also active in Sicily)

When we were about 14 one of the nuns tried to teach us that anybody who wasn't Catholic was going to hell ("extra ecclesia nulla salus"). To our credit, we all said that couldn't be true, and she went away and found the doctrine had been modified since she was at school

I remain firmly in the "he was nuts" camp, but that's where the current lot just start

Yes, when we ask "What do you do?" it's as if the job was the only thing of significance

Yes, reducing the tax burden on the less-well-off would save a lot of jobs in retail and hospitality (and bring in VAT returns)
000
Jo Lonergan @joml.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
He ran under "In your heart you know he's right" to which the reply was "In your guts you know he's nuts". I think of this quite often now, though Goldwater seems quite moderate by modern standards

Well that's sexist! I'm as useless at wrapping as any man, and have resorted to the JLP'S wrapping service more than once

Well, that and an enormous parasitic health insurance system

And return quite a lot of it in VAT on the stuff they can now afford

I don't think that would be automatic. In the olden days the MP would have resigned as a matter of corse, but now shame is outmoded. It would make a recall move possible, but what would be the point if he had just been re-elected
