AI has gone too far. Even the humble floor cleaner’s job isn’t safe from the explosion of progress.

@news.abc.net.au’s “If You’re Listening” with @mattbevan.bsky.social has been my a highlight of my Friday night for a couple years, as corny as that probably sounds. Whether it’s about Taiwan, Iran, US politics or the Secret Service, it’s always excellent and very worth watching.

Water fountains disappeared from the Longleaf Trace in June as the board that governs it grew concerned about how homeless people were using its facilities. Runners and bikers who use the 44-mile trail fear the decision could have dire consequences in Mississippi's summer heat. buff.ly/pBXSvrI

I just drove by my childhood comic book store and it’s now an axe-throwing business. Trying to parse what this says about America.

Kagi is really good and worth the money if one can fit it in their budget. For folks who can’t afford/justify Kagi, startpage uses google search API but anonymizes traffic and there’s no AI, duck duck go is good and brave search is too.

The dangerous law known as FISA Section 702 is up for renewal in Congress. It allows government to spy on Americans’ communications without a warrant. Use our action center to tell Congress to reform Section 702 and end mass warrantless surveillance!

The whole point of submarines is you don’t ever have to use them. Just tell China they’ll never find them because they’re so silent and undetectable.

Have the AUKUS planners considered just telling everyone the submarines have already arrived but nobody can see them cos they’re already out lurking?

I’m stuck here — though I have been looking for software roles in other countries. There’s a lot of room to fall. I love how the argument was that immigrants were taking jobs but now it’s “ oh well we don’t need to create as many jobs because there’s not immigration”

They do that’s so amazing. Just vague slogans and generalities “it’s my vibecoding thought partner/therapist/editor” 😅 Seems like a LOT of money for that. But I’m not some SV genius so what do I know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Can’t wait to watch people breathlessly tell me that this is where we see LLMs take a ton of jobs. It’s weird that we’ve been sold on a thing that will someday happen…probably™ and they still can’t do anything that would remotely justify the costs. And the booster club can’t ever tell you *what*

It’s SV. I’d be more surprised if they don’t. Though how dependent the stock market is on “AI” and growth is dependent on data center buildouts, we might be in for major economic pain. And yet, our markets have grown at roughly half the rate of other peer nations. But we’re “the hottest” country.

Thinkpad now costing $1400. Eventually the delusion breaks I think. I figured it would have by now as we see really really diminishing returns and still no evidence these companies can make money but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Say stuff like this because 1) it makes no sense 2) it’s incorrect The best use I’ve found is “I’m trying to find out something but I don’t know what it’s called” and then I use a search engine once I do. And even then it’s hard to say it’s worth the massive cost. Like my $400 memory kit for my

Yeah it reminds me of when I worked in the hospital and we’d have people doing “word salad” because they weren’t taking medication. I get it, we are incredibly susceptible to personifying things, especially when they present a reasonable facsimile of human speech. But it’s weird to watch people

It’s impressive how much energy they use and how they are able to convince those who are desperate to believe that they’re sentient or will be. It drives me crazy too. I feel like there are genuinely useful applications for transformers but.. LLMs aren’t it

I’m always underwhelmed. For super simple shit that’s annoying like writing regex it’s fine but idk man. Crazy we’ve destroyed consumer electronics, driven up the cost of power and all sorts of other shit for _this_

I am actually sad to have to say this since I have admired much about Disney CEO Bob Iger over the years, but what a profoundly quisling move this is by someone who knows better. It’s shameful and he has tarnished his once proud reputation.

Bluesky seems pretty well written. Basic feature set but the app has been quick, the UI is good and I like a lot of the concepts they are working on. We will see if it is this but I think there is an appetite for an alternative to Twitter in the current form.

Unsure how folks can deny the climate is changing still. Far fewer of them thankfully but the data are unambiguous. Been 110*+ for the last 12 days here in Phoenix and will be for the foreseeable future. In fact, it is supposed to be even hotter. 🫠
