Hey! It’s Grace, we’ve been talking on my other account about your manuscript and the full assessment. I’m having some technical issues with that account after my PC picked up a virus, so I’m using this backup account to reach you for now.

That post-draft reread can be brutal, but sometimes seeing the whole story together makes it much easier to spot what’s actually working and what needs attention. What usually worries you most when you go back through a first draft: plot, pacing, or the writing itself?

GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
That’s totally fair. Sometimes those last few loose threads have a way of multiplying. Are you feeling like you know where the story is headed, or are you figuring it out as you go?

I love that you already have the larger series mapped out while still giving yourself time to develop each part. What kind of story can readers expect from the first book?

Nice! Line edits are where so many small details start coming together: word choice, pacing, and overall readability. How has this round of edits been feeling compared to earlier drafts?

I loved getting the chance to read these chapters and provide detailed feedback on the story’s bigger picture, character development, pacing, and overall flow. Thank you for trusting me with your work. I’m excited to continue supporting this manuscript through the next stage! #BetaReader #Editor

This is such an interesting way to weave personal experiences into fantasy worldbuilding. I love when authors hide little references that only certain readers will catch. Are there any other real-world inspirations you’ve pulled into the Fyrisian Hofrad or the wider world?

Honestly, that’s such a writer problem. The POV you’re currently in always feels like the favorite. Do you find yourself naturally switching between POVs, or does each character have a very different voice?

This looks like a lot of work went into bringing the series’ visual identity together! The character designs already give a sense of a bigger world. What inspired the fantasy setting and these characters?

Almost 1,000 words in one sitting is a great writing sprint! Sometimes the scenes we’re most excited about are the ones that just flow. What’s the story about, and where does this chapter fit into the bigger picture?

Congrats on getting both first drafts completed! It’s always exciting when a story moves from drafting into the editing stage. What kind of feedback or changes are you expecting to focus on during the revision process?

That sounds like such a fulfilling month! I love that you’re using reading and beta work to fuel your own writing too. Since you’re still early in the WIP, do you already have an idea of where this story is heading, or are you discovering it as you go?

GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
That sounds like a very productive wrap-up despite the surprise tooth drama. Congrats on the writing progress and sales! Since you’re tying up loose threads now, are you getting close to finishing the manuscript?

That’s a great place to be in the process! Having the bigger picture of book 3 mapped out can really help strengthen book 1 and make those little details feel intentional. Are you planning to get fresh eyes on the rewrite once the first draft is finished?

That’s understandable. Sometimes the admin side of being a writer takes up more time than expected . Hopefully October still gives you some good writing moments. What are you currently working on?

GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Even with limited writing time, making progress is still a win! It’s great that you can look back and see what you achieved. Were most of your accomplishments writing-related, or a mix of different things?

Wow, what a productive month! I love that you’ve been balancing your own writing with reading and beta work too. What stage is your WIP at right now- still drafting, or are you starting to think about revisions?

Congrats on the writing progress and the sales! It sounds like the project is moving along nicely. I’d love to hear more about the story, what stage are you at with the manuscript?

Sounds like a really productive month! Creating a new city for the series sounds like such a fun worldbuilding step. What can you share about the new place in Septopolis and how it fits into the wider story?

That’s a seriously productive month! Finishing Vitrified, preparing another WIP for publication, and already hitting 30k on a new project is a lot of momentum. What can you share about the high fantasy smut novel you’re working on?

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of typing “The End”… and then immediately wondering what comes next From revisions to beta readers to publishing decisions, every book takes its own path. Writers, what stage of the process do you find the most challenging after finishing a draft? #writing

Finishing a book is a huge milestone, but sometimes the hardest question comes after: what now? Getting a manuscript from “finished” to “ready” can mean revisiting structure, pacing, characters, and reader experience. For authors who’ve finished a draft, what’s usually the next step you take?
000
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
That makes a lot of sense. Those questions can really help uncover the difference between what the author intended and what readers actually feel on the page. Do your readers usually help you spot moments that need more care or rewriting?

GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Haha, absolutely. If you ever get to that stage and want a fresh set of eyes, I’d be happy to do a sample beta read and see if my feedback fits what you’re looking for. Feel free to follow back, and we can chat!

That final stretch before beta readers is always interesting. Those tiny tweaks can feel endless, but once it’s ready, getting fresh eyes on the manuscript can reveal things you’ve stopped noticing yourself. What kind of feedback are you hoping for?

Writers, let’s talk What part of writing do you find hardest? ✍️ Starting the story? 📖 Building the plot? 🔍 Revising what you’ve already written? And what’s one thing you’ve learned about your writing along the way? I’d love to hear how other writers approach the process. #betareader #bookeditor

That sounds like such a fun way to explore the same characters! I like that the storylines can branch off as you explore different interactions. Do you ever end up discovering something about a character that changes how you approach another storyline?
110
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That’s such an interesting evolution. Keeping the same overall arc while expanding the characters, timeline, and complexity sounds like the kind of revision where fresh eyes could really help track how everything connects. Do you have beta readers looking at it yet?
100
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Exactly! That’s where a fresh reader can catch things the writer doesn’t even realize are unclear. Do you usually get more useful feedback from questions like these or from general reactions?
100
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That sounds like a solid plan. Having your wife and a couple of trusted friends read it first could give you some really useful reactions. What kind of feedback would you most want from them: overall story, pacing, or the writing itself?
000
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That sounds like such an interesting first draft to work with! Especially with a story centered around such a messy perspective, I’d be curious to see how the confusion lands for a fresh reader versus what you intended. Are you planning to get beta readers involved after editing?
000
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Haha, I love that your writing group has basically become part of your internal editorial team. I write my own stuff too, alongside beta reading and editing. Do you find those internal voices make revisions easier, or do they sometimes make you overthink?

GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
25k already and only about a quarter finished! That sounds like Fall of the Gods is shaping up to be a substantial one. What’s the dark fantasy world or storyline like this time around?

GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Congratulations on getting that first draft finished! It sounds like there’s a lot of interesting material to work with during the editing stage. What part of Anahit’s story are you most excited to see come together in revisions?

It sounds like this one has really captured your heart. A novelette also gives you a nice space to tell a focused story without having to stretch it unnecessarily. What can you share about the premise?

GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Filling a Moleskine with a whole novel is quite an achievement! It sounds like the time waiting on beta feedback has actually given this new story room to grow. Are you already thinking about what kind of feedback you’ll want once this one is finished?
100
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That’s what makes it so interesting. You’ve got a rough direction, but the characters can still throw a curveball at any point. I’d love to hear more about how you work that way, can we talk in DMs?
000
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That’s exciting! It’s always interesting when a beta reader’s feedback leads to changes in the next chapter. What kind of edits did they recommend for this one?

GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That “beginning, middle, end” feeling is HUGE! Congratulations on getting the whole first draft across the finish line. When you start the second pass, what are you expecting to focus on most: structure, pacing, characters, or the bloodletting?
010
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That’s a serious first manuscript! 212k is a lot to wrestle with, so splitting it into two must have been quite a process. As you work through the second draft, are you mainly focusing on structure and pacing, or refining the prose?
000
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Congratulations on finishing the first draft! Letting it sit for a few weeks before revisiting it should give you some useful distance. What kind of story is the 90s Witch Book?
000
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
This sounds like such an interesting mix of settings and themes! The Southern US reader angle makes a lot of sense too. What kind of feedback are you hoping your beta readers will focus on beyond Kate’s authenticity?

GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
You finished the manuscript. Now comes the question every author eventually faces: ** What next?** Querying agents? Self-publishing? More revisions? Or getting a fresh set of eyes on the manuscript first? Where are you in your publishing journey right now? #WritingCommunity #BetaReader #Editor

That’s fair! So the mystery isn’t where the story came from; it’s where the characters are going to take you next. After 13 books, do you still have a rough idea of where the series is heading, or are you discovering that as you go?
110
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I love that. It really sounds like you’re discovering the story alongside them rather than deciding everything for them. With 13 books now, do you ever look back and think, “How on earth did we get here?”
110
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Honestly, same! The “which aspects of voodoo and magic need clarification?” question would be really interesting too, because that’s the kind of thing the writer can assume makes sense while a fresh reader gets lost.
100
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That’s definitely one of those lessons you only need to learn once! Do you think writing the whole story before publishing will give you more freedom to shape the scenes and pacing?
100
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That sounds like a really interesting character arc, especially if the earlier choices only become important much later. Do you plant any subtle hints about that development in books 1 and 2?
100
GRACIENOTES @jokseditorial.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That sounds like a good place to be; if it’s mostly phrasing and cleanup, the foundation is already there. Do you think you’ll have someone else read it once you’ve finished your revision pass?
