PS: I have learned to read, write, speak, and understand Dutch at an A2 level, as well as passing the Dutch Civics and Dutch Job Market tests in order to become a Dutch Citizen, which happened in 2024. 7 months after moving, I unpacked my pipe collection. Yesterday I had a chance to smoke some Boswell Northwoods in a beautiful Il Ceppo I bought at Mission Pipe Shop in San Jose in 2011. I enjoyed it so much. Why did I wait so long to enjoy this simple pleasure after moving?

I am getting serious pushback on posts where I take delight in the destruction of Teslas. I have never damaged anyone’s property. But, if I was gonna start tomorrow, it would be a Tesla. Preferably on the lot of a dealership. Individual owners should do whatever they need to do to offload theirs

My brother called me for my birthday. He told me he liked it better when gays “flew under the radar like our [closeted] gay uncles.” He added “gay and trans people go around making everyone so uncomfortable now.” Queer and trans people make my brother uncomfortable merely by existing.

Just got back from Houston where I got to visit with my stepdaughter and her husband. Also got to catch up with some old friends, eat amazing food, and do some shopping for clothes (in US sizes!) and cigars/pipe tobacco. Mixed emotions. I love the states, but I hate eating BBQ next to a gun store.

My mom, in an original oil painting (circa 1955) by her ex-boyfriend, Victor. It was supposed to go to my nephew when she passed away, but I couldn’t bear to let him have it. He would most likely have thrown it away or sold it for drug money.

The theater world lost a dear, dear person last Monday. My friend Martín Rojas Dietrich (on the left) was incredibly talented. Offstage, he was incredibly kind. I adored him. Loved him. I am in shock and despair that he is gone. I can’t conceive of it. I miss my friend so very, very much. My heart.

Reading Trevor Noah’s “Born a Crime”, about his childhood in South Africa. It’s remarkable. About 70% through and already missing it. He has such a distinctive writer’s voice. This book really challenged what I thought I knew about South Africa and Apartheid.
