Use of the word "evil" in official congressional e-newsletters, over time, by party

There’s lots we can do. Liberally-inclined people are actually the majority. Liberalism with a “big tent” mentality appeals to way more people than fascism does. Liberalism with a ”Purity Test” mentality appeals to a much smaller minority. Expanding the tent is easier than rage-quitting the USA.

Are you being argumentative because it’s your usual way of interacting online or did you not read my entire thread?

Do you seriously think this technological hurdle is so great that it renders inoperable the 3,700 warheads in the United States? We tremble in fear already that some rogue state will smuggle a tiny bomb into New York harbor.

You want nukes in a failed state? Same problem. Nukes.

That’s it exactly.

JohnRoderick @johnroderick.bsky.social · 07/09/2025
Same problem though. The liberal half joins Canada and the redneck half does what? Becomes a developing nation that happens to have a superpower arsenal and just peacefully coexists with its northern neighbor? The MAGA America would become a true uncontainable fascist warmongering nightmare.

New Regionalism is great, but stop thinking the USA is “too far gone” to save. You have no idea the Hell you’re trying to conjure. The USA MUST be saved and redirected to a path of liberal democracy. That’s the only path forward. If you’re convinced otherwise you are on a suicide charge.

You can’t disarm the USA once you split from it, you just hand the guns, the flag and the documents over to exactly the people who will delight in using them against you. You think a New Confederacy with nuclear submarines is going to be a peaceful neighbor with the Pacifica they already despise?

Hate to buzzkill, but all this talk of regions succeeding from the US is dangerously ignorant of reality. Every time a liberal says, “America is broken and we’re going to leave it,” they cede ownership of the IP of the USA and its unfathomable arsenal to the LEAST qualified to manage it peacefully.

Even IF, somehow, the military bases in Pacifica ALL followed their progressive officers (lol) to become the Army and Navy of Western States, we’re in an instant Cold War with the antagonistic state that controls the Minuteman missiles in Montana and North Dakota and the sub base in Kings Bay GA.

JohnRoderick @johnroderick.bsky.social · 07/09/2025
People talk about the West Coast economy as if geopolitics is completely based on trade. Now imagine your dream Pacifica state of CA, OR and WA where every military base is the sovereign possession of a “The United States” that’s just the MAGALAND that happily claimed the flag and the Constitution.

JohnRoderick @johnroderick.bsky.social · 07/09/2025
Nuclear weapons are spread across the US. If you contemplate dissolving the national government you place those nukes, and the military that administers them, in contention. Whatever rump state claims to be “The United States” inherits the nukes and becomes a global superpower. It ain’t California.

JohnRoderick @johnroderick.bsky.social · 07/09/2025
When the coastal regions imagine themselves as peaceful, ecological, democratic successor states with new Constitutions they ignore that they’d be confronting one or more antagonistic states all too ready to declare themselves the inheritors of the IP of the United States, including the nukes.

If WA, OR and CA were to secede from the US it does not mean the admirals in Bangor-Kitsap are suddenly going to swear allegiance to the Governor of Pacifica. They would have no framework to do that and we would not want them to have that authority. That would be really bad.

JohnRoderick @johnroderick.bsky.social · 07/09/2025
Just to focus a little, nuclear weapons still pose the greatest existential threat to human existence. There are 3,700 warheads dispersed throughout the USA in the custody of a military that swears allegiance to the U.S. Constitution.

I feel vindicated in never having tried to sing along with Its The End Of The World As We Know It. I just smiled, bobbed my head and awkwardly clapped on the one and three.

Ages 17-21 I did a lot of hitchhiking. Across the USA, up and down both coasts and all around Europe. Then one day I never did it again. I was in Ft. Collins and hitched down to Durango and after that every ride I got was with people I knew. I can’t picture the last guy. Had no idea he was my last.

This “summit” in Alaska was a giant gift to Putin, made him look important and put him back on the big stage. God, Trump is such a bozo.

I know there are folks who prefer one social media platform to another but they all seem the same to me. BlueSky has just as many angry insane people as threads as far as I can tell.

Harrell is an entrenched old boy pol and Wilson is a young activist. Wilson accused Harrell of being “in bed” with all the usual players including the cops and big developers, Harrell mostly tries to ignore her and run on his record. It boils down to: would you rather have a mayor or an activist?

Seattle has “strong city council, weak mayor” government where the council makes law. There’s open warfare between moderate democrats (or Boomer NIMBY neo-conservatives) and socialist progressives (or bullying Marxist millennial fantasists). The two groups hate each other so much it’s unfathomable.

Don’t get sucked in. Just because someone SCREEDS doesn’t mean they know anything, myself included. Calm defeats panic in every instance. Hope defeats despair in every instance. Curiosity defeats certainty in every instance.

The amount of political Dunning-Kruger on BlueSky is astounding. Post after post from SUPER CONFIDENT people who already know everything. Remember the general truth: the more strident a person is in their viewpoint the less they actually know about the world.

Vote for progressive candidates that focus on programs and avoid rage-baiting. Speak intelligently and calmly to your friends. Mirror the reasoned sanity you want to see in the world and have faith it will come to pass.

What can most of us do? Stop panic-posting, quit amplifying doom, read the news once a day for 30mins only. The time you normally spend doom-scrolling spend reading books like Hope in the Dark by Rebecca Solnit and Humankind by Rutger Bregman.

The ones you’ve known have been fairly flaccid. Just one Democratic president who really goes after it can reverse a lot of damage in short order, with the support of a united coalition of the left. *hint hint* Requires UNITED coalition of Left.

JohnRoderick @johnroderick.bsky.social · 06/08/2025
Politics is about minimizing damage when you’re out of power and maximizing progress when you’re in power. A lot of the hopelessness in the air is partly because most people alive today have never seen a Democratic administration that MAXIMIZED PROGRESS.
180
JohnRoderick @johnroderick.bsky.social · 06/08/2025
Most of what they’re doing is superficial garbage, and most of their attempts at truly systemic destruction have stalled or failed. Short-term damage is real, but we can correct it. Thwarting their work to break institutions is where to concentrate our resources.

JohnRoderick @johnroderick.bsky.social · 06/08/2025
It’s important to filter the white noise of the Trump administration, the stuff that will be easy to undo, from their attempts to do real damage to underlying structures.
