How time flies! 34 years ago this weekend I did my first match reporting for national radio, joining some very well known names on BBC Radio 5 and my first ever appearance on Sports Report.

Had an interesting week aboard P&O cruise ship Arvia as the guest speaker, talking about football commentary, the recent World Cup, and some tales from my time in broadcasting. Certainly a bit different from a cold Tuesday night up a gantry! #commentator #football #voiceover #presenter #freelance

Always a privilege to be asked by HBS to work on the world feed coverage at a FIFA World Cup. Terrific to be alongside David Prutton doing commentary on the matches at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, working with a great crew, providing coverage for television audiences all over the globe.

Totally agree with my friend and colleague @danohagan.bsky.social who has promoted much discussion about “commentary cam” with the below post. Maybe it’s a generational thing. Like to hear what others think.

I absolutely 100% agree with this part. Why people feel the need to film themselves doing off tube commentary and then post it on social media is a complete mystery to me. It’s not about the commentator, as JP says.

Some commentators use a computer, some write it all in longhand, there is no set way, whatever works for you, but as I hand write all my match notes a broken thumb is not ideal….

A fascinating read if like me you grew up watching football on ITV on a Sunday afternoon. I would never have dreamt that I would become @itvmeridian commentator for six years. Also @MEvinylrevival states there will be more in the series to cover later years. Highly recommended.
