Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Italian trains in general lived up to their reputation, very good system and TrenItalia app also worked well 000
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Way back home after final stop in Cinque Terre, did a night in Marseille - great city! Now on TGV (maybe the best transport infrastructure in Europe) to Paris, Eurostar to London and then National Express bus to Bristol 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Got a night train to Cinque Terre, this was maybe favourite part of the trip as we had a few days walking. The towns themselves are nice but quite intensely touristy and the food in this area wasn't amazing. Really enjoyed the walking and great idea to have this touristy area dedicated to walking 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Final day we went to Archeology museum in Naples which has most of the objects, frescos from Pompeii. This was mind blowing as the quality of paintings they have been able to uncover is amazing, need to look into what restoration has been required as they look incredible 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Did a day trip to Pompei which was well worth it, very impressive tourist attraction (not best choice of words) think if we had done this first it would have blown my mind but after Rome, Verona,... etc we had seen similar stuff if not to quite this scale 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026We stayed further out of Naples than I was initially happy about (even though I booked the accommodation). In hindsight where we were had a beautiful view of the bay and there was a bus out from the centre. We didn't spend loads of time in Naples but it kinda fit the stereotype - absolutely chaotic 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Got a boat to Naples via Sorrento, which was a pretty and decent sized town, more modern than I expected. We had a nice lunch at a wine bar and got on our way to Naples. 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026The Amalfi coast is beautiful, my main memory of this area will be the extent of tunneling through rock to facilitate houses and transport infrastructure. The food here wasn't the best, felt like captive audience and limited effort had gone into it 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026We essentially killed a morning in Salerno waiting for arrival and then got a boat to Amalfi and then walked through the cliff face to Atrani - the smallest place on our trip. 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026From Sicily went to Salerno where we had an addition to our group for the next few legs of the trip, this was nice as we had barely spoken to anyone else except basic Italian with restaurant staff 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Also a lot of food/plastic wastage from standard meals given for each train 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026We got three night trains in Italy and it was mostly positive to travel such a big distance without using the days for it. It did create admin and a bit of fatigue checking out of hotels early, checking into hotels in the afternoons whilst leaving towns at ~ 23:00 and arriving places ~ 07:00 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Also reminds me I forgot day trip from Bologna to Ravenna and beach day there in the Adriatic - warmest water I have ever swam in, very shallow beach and first experience of paid-for beach in Italy, had a nice day and also good to slightly impromptu get to see that coast of Italy 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I am still slightly torn on it, think I would be ok if it was lower percentage of paid-for beaches. Don't mind it in terms of sort of further tourist tax 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026On private beaches in Italy. It does seem wrong that such a high percentage of the coast is paid-for access. Not strictly privately owned which does lessen the blow a bit, government is getting money back from usage of beaches by tourists and it is easier for locals to use/access free beaches 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Taormina was big change, tiny tourist-heavy town/village in the mountainous Sicily. Again a lot of American tourists. Very beautiful scenery. Only here for one night, had a very nice day at a private beach which wasn't too expensive and was a lovely relaxing day after a lot of travel/walking around 110
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026First night train of the trip from Rome to Sicily, have done a few before but this was very different, felt like we were hurtling down Italy, quite difficult to sleep with the feeling of that speed 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026They are impressive but just think what an org actually trying to help people could have done with this wealth 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Main feeling about Rome tourism-wise was liked the Roman stuff but the renaissance Vatican stuff feels a bit sour. Essentially redistributing money from people of Europe to build these ornate palaces (churches) for centuries. 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Rome felt very different to everywhere previous. The train station was huge and immediately new order of people. Liked the area we stayed in - Re Di Roma. Went to a great craft beer place Epirhop which was one of my favourite evenings of the whole trip, good pizza and Suppli from next door too 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Went for a nice run along the river which had a wide pedestrian and cycle path. As a tourist attraction the Medici chapel was one of my favourites, some amazing sculptures and tombs in a small easily digestible area. Really liked the affordable Schiacciata sandwiches everywhere in the centre 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Short trip to Florence on the train, suddenly way more Americans everywhere, Emilia Romagna had a lot of German tourists. Florence was busy and had an incredible number of taxis, as opposed to many private vehicles. The walks on the south side of the river were nicely chilled 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Did a day trip to Verona from Bologna, easy trip by train, the Arena there is incredible from the outside, amazing structure. Quite weird from inside as still used for opera, which is incredible for a building of that age but does change it as a tourist attraction 100
Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Bologna somewhere I was really looking forward to, loved the portico architecture of the place, made it quite "weather resistant", easy to walk around in the heat and be sheltered from the rain. Very cheap, nice food and wine too. A good size to walk around, also well connected by train #bologna 110

Johnny Lyne @johnnylyne.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Love Munich as a city, I guess part of that is it feels very comfortable if you can afford it. I like the food culture and the beer is superb. Englischer Garten is one of the best parks in the world - had a great run there. 100
