You can express dismay at the currently low numbers of women in top levels of science research, but to imply that the Nobel committee is just sexist is pretty fucking facile

In academic physics and chemistry, men are greatly over-represented at the professor level (like 70-80%). This is changing over time, with many more women in studies and junior levels, but to get to Nobel level takes probably 20+yrs career, and Nobels are rewards for long-established research

There's no rhyme or reason to their positions. They're just following the predominant dogma of their own in-group.

The utter shamelessness of Kemi Badenoch boasting at Conservative party conference about 'defending press freedom' and berating Reform for banning critical journalists from their conference, just days after banning Byline Times journalists from her own

I love the way they all defend it as "oh it's just about having a conversation", when the motion's statement is the most declamatory, shut-off-all-discussion possible.

Wow. I had been interested in the Greens in the despair of the Starmer era, but this shows how deeply unserious and unelectable they now are. The good thing I suppose is that the bulk of their voters will return to Labour's Burnham, not a bad thing to counter the neo-nazis at next election.

AI biology lab Anthropic's first discovery questioned - scientists see his unpublished work in it - Aroged
Last week, Anthropic presented findings from its biolabs. The company uses artificial intelligence agents to discover promising new enzymes. Some scientists were quick to express doubts about the achievement. An expert at the University of Copenhagen said his team shared their research results with the Anthropic AI model, and that the neural network’s touted “discovery” […]

Well, well, well - if it isn’t the consequences of our own actions. It would appear that migrants are not, in fact, the fiscal drain we’ve been told they are by years if we go by the £4bn to £6.5bn shortfall that’s been caused by the precipitous drop in numbers under this government. Funny that.

Also as was often the case in french BD, he was often working as a team with a writer doing the story, giving the work more narrative heft.

He could also take the piss out of himself - I remember a 4-pager story in Fluide Glacial mag with all his usual over-the-top creative brio, which was just about a cosmic guy having a bout of gastric reflux.

To be fair I haven't looked at them for 30 years, so recollection a fair bit fuzzy. Some of it was graphic spectacle, but there were bone fide stories (his Lone Sloane series, adventures of a planetary explorer). He also illustrated Salammbo, the novel by Flaubert, which is definitely substantial!

Yes he was very unique at the time (70s and early 80s) - most of the BD I grew up with was jokey and satirical, with expert but simple drawing. And there he was in the back of the room, drawing up these absolutely monumental and mystical things, definitely more "art" than comics.

Hi Dave! (Nonworkingmonkey's husband here). Not sure about his reach in the UK in the 80s, as I wasn't here. He was a huge presence in the francophone BD universe, perhaps may have been translated - but I don't think there was much cultural exchange between anglo and franco worlds in those days.
