whoa, just had a crazy idea for getting faded inner hatched ribbons for polygons in ArcGIS Online and it totally worked! now, to try to get back to my original objectives today.

This is fun, a kajillion years ago I made a map of hurricanes for National Geographic magazine. They asked for digital assets to use in an animated version but I never saw it. Just stumbled on it now!

In the early stages of a river map. I didn't like the full (even mostly masked out) street network so I'm only showing bridges (because river). Using point symbols and a rotation. Having fun so far.
