Danny Kruger, who is in charge of preparing the party for office (which I hope proves to be an abortive task), told the FT that Reform would cut the civil service to about 300,000 employees from more than 520,000 today. So they aim to shed over 200,000 civil servants! More on this tomorrow.

Reform UK has said it will cut the size of the civil service almost in half if it ever wins power, slashing hundreds of thousands of jobs.

London weighting is also a fight for the PCS and no doubt other unions as well. So solidarity with the BMA.

It is good to see in the US, the UK, Canada, Germany and elsewhere the vital struggle to unionise Amazon but also to hold them to account.

A vital debate in all union.

Unions need to be committed to turning up the heat on defending migrants, including organising migrant workers and defending them from the new restrictions. A defence of migrants needs to go hand-in-hand with a political alternative that can turn working-class people away from anger and grievance.

The trend downwards in both regular and irregular immigration — including in the numbers entering via small boats — is what the government is calling success. But that “success” has emboldened, not stopped, the far right.

We need to defend migrants, migration, and the right to claim asylum with clear fact-based arguments. Appeals to people’s better nature will not work. We will need to be prepared for a difficult fight for these ideas in our communities and workplaces.

Thomas seems to have unified a number of local “Patriot” groups and they are organised through both public-facing and private social media platforms. They have taken some “inspiration” from the direct-action tactics of the environmental movement and the left.

The forces in Dover and Portsmouth were assembled by Daniel Thomas (“Tommo”), Tommy Robinson’s former bodyguard. Both Patriot Platform and Robinson himself have taken to displaying Christianity as the key “value” of their politics — they are not far-right, they say, but ordinary decent Christians.

Patriot Platform are would be paramilitaries. They will, if not stopped, travel wherever there is a flashpoint over immigration. Where people save refugees from drowning, where the government houses people waiting for results of their asylum claims, they will stir up hatred.

Since then the RNLI lifeboat station in Portsmouth has been temporarily closed due to online and physical abuse at volunteers. Similar abuse caused the lifeboat museum in Poole to close for several days.

On 5 Sept a new far-right group, Patriot Platform, signaled its existence by blocking a main road in Dover, then next day joining a demo in Portsmouth against the arrival of asylum seekers. They helped form a blockade around coaches which were due to transport asylum seekers to processing centres.

Unless Ofwat and Defra provide PCS members with reasonable assurances in the coming days, the ballot for strike action and action short of a strike will open on 28 September and close on 19 October.

If my memory is right, workers in this hospital have struck successfully in the past. Their 2015 dispute was widely regarded as Germany's first major hospital strike focused specifically on safe staffing levels rather than pay.

We need labour movement-community anti-far right campaigns everywhere which can do these things in local workplaces and on the streets. We need to turn working-class people away from the far right and show that it is possible to fight for our own class interests.

John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Unions should defend migrants by propagating the facts and by organising migrant workers into unions.
000
John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
There are many difficult practical steps to take in the fight against the far right. The left needs to mobilise in the trade unions to fight for the policies thousands of union members have voted for — to tax the rich and rebuild public services.

John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
We should champion instead the example of the many people in Belfast who stepped in to offer food and shelter to migrants.

John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
It is the urgent responsibility of the left to combat these divisive lies — about claimants, migrants, and other hate figures of the far right. We must hold “respectable politicians” who help create these narratives to account.

John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Yet asylum seekers are a tiny percentage of inward migration to the UK. False received wisdom bolsters the far right racist populist campaigns for mass deportations, the hate speech about “invaders” and the pogroms against migrants on the streets of Belfast and elsewhere.

John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The far right’s technique of proposing outrageously reactionary policies has successfully ensured mainstream acceptance of their narratives. All kinds of distorted information about migration is now circulated by most politicians and media outlets as “received wisdom”.

All this to cut taxes for the better-off and to appeal to the dyed-in-the-wool reactionary base of Reform - a base Farage fears losing to the even further-right party, Restore Britain.

While Andy Burnham and Labour dither, Reform UK is upping the ante with brutal welfare proposals. Their plan includes: • Stripping benefits from 1.3M non-UK citizens • Cutting annual benefit uprating permanently • Means-testing PIP and slashing direct cash support

Such a programme could win over disillusioned older working-class voters of all age groups and rebuild core support for Labour.

Andy Burnham has yet to show his promised dramatic shift away from the priorities of the Starmer government. His promises, the £2 bus fare cap, or scrapping of VAT on electricity bills, are details compared to what is needed: a programme of rebuilding public services and building council homes.

John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Since Andy Burnham became leader, Labour’s showing in the polls has risen from around 18% to 26%. Labour has gained at the expense of Reform, as have the Tories, but also from the Greens and the Lib Dems, who have dropped in the polls. This is significant, but could be short-lived. More tomorrow.

John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Whilst it is clear that Reform has a core vote, the data also show the limitations of Reform’s appeal — it’s high only in specific regions and among a certain demographic, the over-50s. Could Labour could win, or win back, some Reform voters?

John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
81% of people who support Reform today, voted for them at the last general election. So the majority of Reform voters are loyal. Polling for Reform is also higher in the north east where it is at 30%. Reform appear to be building a core vote there. So I want to discuss Reform over the next days
000
John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Since September 2025 polling for Reform has been falling gradually, from around 30% to around 25% now. The drop is significant but not so dramatic that we can be sure Reform is on a continuous downward trajectory. Other data indicate, unfortunately, a relatively healthy outlook for the party.

These changes bring union balloting into the modern age while maintaining the principles of secrecy, security and independent scrutiny. Making it easier for members to take part can only strengthen democratic participation and help ensure more workers have their voices heard.

Today marks an important step forward for trade union democracy. The law has changed, allowing secure electronic and workplace voting for a range of statutory union ballots.

I agree with the "We Own It" position on buses. We need public control and public ownership. For me, such control/ownership is also a step towards free bus travel.

I agree with all eight measures, though I would go further in regard to some. But I would add a ninth demand, which is to scrap all the anti trade union laws.

Climate change is already here. Moving to net zero increases the chances of preventing average global temperatures rising 2°C, 3°C or more. So moving to net zero will not stop climate change, but it gives us a chance to reduce its long-term impact. So, Mr Tice, it's worth it.

John Moloney @johnmoloney.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Reform UK’s Richard Tice, acknowledges that climate change is “real”, but says there is no proof that net zero policies will halt it. Climate change is caused by human activity e.g. greenhouse gases. Net zero is about eliminating/dramatically reducing, those gases

Tice briefly acknowledged climate change is “real”, but said there was no proof net zero policies would halt it – and to think it can be stopped is “arrogant” So as crops fail and you boil, be thankful that the heat is good for English wine.

The reps noted that in many places there are no thermometers for staff to look at; management keep it to themselves what the temperature is. We will be combating this.

H&S reps also raised this from Reg 7 of The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 'A sufficient number of thermometers shall be provided to enable persons at work to determine the temperature in any workplace inside a building'.

PCS is campaigning for stronger legal protections, including a maximum workplace temperature of 30°C. The union is developing a model heat agreement, heat risk assessment and exploring workers' heat rights under existing safety regulations.

Over the last few days, PCS Safety Reps have been meeting to discuss the growing challenge of extreme heat at work. With the UK already experiencing multiple heatwaves this year, heat stress, dehydration, fatigue and increased accident risks are becoming a serious workplace health & safety issue.

The unions must push the 'new' government for a second Employment Rights Act; one that gives a positive right to strike, sectorial bargaining and scraps all of the anti-trade union laws.
