Unhallowed ground #badlands #newmexico #landscapephotography #darksky #lowkey #classicmono #eck #wilderness #hiking #erosion #geology
The central area of the image showcases three connected ridges of weathered mudstone and shale, light in tone, with a pebble field at their base. In the center of the pebble field a scraggly juniper struggles to eke out an existence. In the distance at upper left, a darker-tinged mesa rises into the sky. Canon 5Dll, f/11, 50mm

Who is that ghoulish dame in red at his left? She seems rather ill at ease.

Mudman - undisclosed badlands locality, NW New Mexico #flowstone #mudstone #erosion #badlands #newmexico #coloraday #redwed #eck #landscapephotography #wilderness #notrail #juniper #bluesky
A conical-shaped mound of mudstone rises above a slope of scattered sandstone pebbles. At right, a lighter-toned mound is capped by flat rocks with a juniper bush growing from its peak. The sky beyond is deep blue. Canon 5Dll, f/8, 50mm

A stark badlands terrain in contrasty black and white, with two towering formations - one close at right, and one farther back at left, against a featureless gray sky. One yet-closer rock formation shows up brighter at extreme lower right. The rock faces are heavily weathered and eroded; the formation in back shows clear bands of stratification.

A charming pair of hoodoos near Escalante, UT for #twosday. Self-critique in ALT. #blackandwhite #classicmono #eck #hoodoos #erosion #geology #escalante #utah #hiking #wilderness #rockformation
A pair of light-colored stone columns, each topped by a darker-hued mass of more resistant sandstone. The formations rest on a sloping plain of white rock, with more capstone material forming a ridge at right. The photographer (me!) should have gotten lower to better separate the hoodoos from the background structures. Sony RX100, f/5.6, 10mm

A wall of vari-colored sandstone is topped by oddly globular rock segments. It appears to be at an angle trending upward to the left. Above, a deep blue sky is partially obscured by puffy clouds. Below, a sandy, red-tinged desert floor plays host to a pair of nearly white boulders. Canon 6D, f/8, 44mm

It looks familiar only in the sense that I recognize that general terrain as being part of the country I love. (Red rock, sandstone, monumental beauty.) Thanks for sharing.

View of a series of steep cliffs, some in the foreground and, across a canyon, some behind. A band of shadow along the bottom of the image adds drama. A bushy juniper appears in the right foreground, while dense gray clouds cap the farther cliffs.

The riot of color compelled me to pull over here and break out the camera. Hwy. 12 on Boulder Mtn., Utah. This picture taken in 2018 - Anne and I will be returning to the Escalante area next week. WOOHOO! #blueskymonday #eck #mountainmonday #utah #fallcolors #autumn #aspens #highway #scenicroad
A low-slope mountain draped in colorful fall foliage beneath a spotless blue sky. A sinuous two-lane road at its base. The road vanishes from sight around a bend, trending upward. Canon 6D, f/11, 59mm

Digital b&w can be just as artful as digital color. Cropping is a personal preference - you should decide what composition you prefer, and then go with it. (As my H.S. English teacher used to say, "It's your nickel.")

When I first saw it, I was shocked at how fascinating a film about an ordinary conversation could be. Among my all-time favorite films.
