Strange how the Nazi fetish has driven Russia to name this group after Hitler’s failed African experiment. At least Wagner (the composer) didn’t lose like Rommel did.

The urge for democracy isn’t the same as its presence, arguably quite unfortunately.

It says muslim-majority MENA. Israel isn’t muslim-majority. Iran clearly qualifies. Perhaps Somalia is a stretch.

The Iranian Ayatollahs have been remarkably reasonably in terms of relations with the West over the decades, all things considered. Not sure at all that something needed to change from a self-interested Western point of view.

Of course by 2020 nuclear wasn’t producing much of Germany’s electricity. Because a political decision was made a decade earlier to shut plants early. That’s why output dropped from almost a quarter before that decision.

johnlovesdogs.bsky.social @johnlovesdogs.bsky.social · 17/02/2026
Just under a quarter of electricity production is not insignificant. Instead of keeping nuclear, Germany has burnt more coal and been more dependent on Russia. Why wouldn’t Russia support that?

johnlovesdogs.bsky.social @johnlovesdogs.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
You are absolutely right. But typically these ongoing costs of nuclear are still relatively low. It’s also worth looking at Soviet and Russian support to anti-nuclear groups in the EU. Germany closing its safe nuclear plants ahead of time caused massive energy dependency on Russia.

johnlovesdogs.bsky.social @johnlovesdogs.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
Nuclear is expensive to build now: significantly more than renewables in many places. But the costs of running plants built years ago are relatively small.

I’m not sure the evidence backs this up. Also, we should be tackling people who act against children, not those who feel attraction to them. Two very different things.

The journalist asks if there is the possibility of listening to ‘our’ high-ranking people. Given she is speaking Ukrainian, is she not talking about high-ranking Ukrainians?

I have long thought an open system like StackExchange could revolutionise academic publishing. Let all academics rate each other’s papers, perhaps with ‘more serious’ academics getting more voting weight.

That’s classic. I see one-stripe, 2-stripes and 4-stripes, but no 3-stripes. No self-respecting gopnik would wear anything other than numerically correct fake Adidas

I nearly gave up on the Monuments Men recently due to similar issues. Invented dialogue, and also much mist lifting on a cold autumn day. That and the incessant Berlin, Germany references, as if we might be confused about which faffing Berlin was at issue.

Plenty of turbulence and ill-will generated by other states in the region. And, like you say, the period in question ended with the 2003 invasion, which was entirely a war of choice on Bush’s part. So should the region fear a Gulf War 3 more than they should today’s Iran?

I’m by no means a ME expert, but was post-1991 Iraq so bad for its neighbours (obviously it was for Kurds etc internally). Was it not Bush that made Iraq into the regional problem that it became?

I have been told that the Italians believe that caffeine only works to keep you awake in the presence of milk. Thus they don’t drink cappucini later in the day so they aren’t up all night. Espresso after dinner, though, is perfectly fine.

Just so we are clear: none of these are an issue at all according to the rules of war. You just want the person who planted the presumed bomb or dropped the car off to have worn a Ukrainian uniform. I suppose that’s fair. But how do you feel about practically every resistance effort ever?
110
johnlovesdogs.bsky.social @johnlovesdogs.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
Ok, so far you have had a problem with 1. the attack being far from the frontline, 2. the general ‘not being on duty’, 3. the general being in his ‘civilian home’ (he wasn’t) and 4. his being in a public space.
100
johnlovesdogs.bsky.social @johnlovesdogs.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
So, presuming this was a car bomb, you’d be happy if the assassin drove the car to the apartment block while in Ukrainian uniform?

I think you have this completely wrong. Treachery is deceiving your enemy by eg pretending to surrender, feigning being wounded etc. It does not cover things like booby traps. Happy to consider any evidence you can provide to the contrary. Otherwise it might be helpful if you admit your error.

Article 23 prohibits several things, but none of those apply here. Care to quote the exact text you are referring to?
