I’m sure Carrie is good but Mike Flanagan saying Carrie is more empathetic as a thin girl is kinda fucked up.

Carrie is fat and unlikable and that's part of the entire story. You as a reader are supposed to be uncomfortable because Carrie is not a likable protagonist. And the entire purpose of the book is for you to realize you are part of the bad people because you don't feel empathy for Carrie. Or if you do you are Carrie.
Mike Flanagan said everything by saying he changed her to make her empathetic and then the changes he made were making her thin. He, like much of society, don't find fat girls empathetic.
But this is about more than being empathetic for someone who is fat and unlikable. A fat unlikable teenage girl at that.
