Fiona was never going to believe him... A snippet from The Silted Silence. #WIPSnips
My fingers pause on the fake chrome door knocker. Lights are on inside, movement behind the glass. The words I’ve been practising all day feel slippery, hard to hold. I search for them, finding only fragments.
I knock anyway. Fiona answers almost at once, still in her work clothes—a blue cardigan and dark trousers. A familiar ache pulls at my chest. She has kept herself intact; I am worn through. Age-battered where she is toned and efficient.
‘Adie. Come in.’ She steps back, opening the door onto the scent of coconut and vanilla. The bungalow is a tidy mix of Scandinavian furniture and feature walls. She takes my tatty corduroy jacket. Removing my trainers, I catch sight of my socks—worn thin at the heels, the skin showing through.

I found "cousin" in an old fantasy novel I wrote and never published—so still, strictly speaking, a WIP. Maybe I'll come back to this one...
Peering around uneasily, she lets the last vestiges of the dream dissolve into the morning gloom. Elsin lies on her back, deeply asleep, her breathing barely perceptible. It is the seventh morning with her friend’s family: mother, aunt, uncle Karn, and two wild cousins, Tarn and Kerogham. Karn sighs in his sleep. Awake, he is stern and abrupt, his sun-worn face etched with disapproval and his hands leather-hard; by night, he sounds almost gentle.
It is bitterly cold. North of the Weimar forest, across the nameless steppe grasslands sweeping up to the northern mountains, spring is late. Slushy patches of old snow linger beside small yellow flowers greeting the promise of warmth. Yesterday, Tarn wove those same blossoms into a crown, wearing it like a faery princess as they skipped and played beneath the sun. For a precious, fleeting hour, Serafina forgot her past, lost herself in magic and make-believe. In that brief respite from the empty landscape and the endless, mocking sky, she reclaimed a childhood she had almost lost.

It’s quiet up here, but part of me misses the noise. The hum of the streetlights at two in the morning, the way the kitchen shelves would #quake as the L roared past, and constant sirens, responding to emergencies that were never ours. I miss the city, and who we were when we lived there. #vss365

We follow the tide-worn groynes down to the waves. “It's quiet today,” you say, skimming a stone across the surface. We watch its progress among the foam and detritus. The wreckage adorns the shallows, floating, dead in the water. Further out, a red sail twists and wallows. #vss365 #sail

I hauled aside a rusty shelving unit, metal flaking off against my palms, clearing space on the timber wall for an investigation board. If my family asked, it was an art project. In the centre, I pinned the photograph Skyla had stolen from Mrs Carter—her son, Freddy. Beside it, I tacked a slip of paper with 1966 scrawled in black marker.
Next came Jamie’s archive printouts. I pinned the front-page story about Rose Taylor beside Freddy, studying the grainy newsprint copy. She was pretty—a faint, hesitant smile, dark eyes staring out from the past, holding back secrets.

The #mountain had always been a friend: solid, unwavering, permanent. Some called it extinct. Others warned it was only sleeping. On the day we married, dark smoke marred its peak. By morning, the horizon was bare—flat and featureless. #vss365 #scififri

#WIPSnips 29/9: My first WIPsnip... from a psychological thriller/folk horror novel, working title ‘The Silted Silence’.
I squeezed my eyes shut, but the monochrome meadow remained—burned into my retinas like a flashbulb flare.
Downstairs, Mum moved about the kitchen—the clatter of a teacup, the muffled drone of the morning news. The everyday world turned on its axis, oblivious that the stubble in the fields was whispering Skyla’s name. I tried to call out to her, to tell her I’d found the coin, but my throat was a dry well, choked with the phantom reek of stop-bath vinegar and damp earth.
Mum found me an hour later. She brought me paracetamol and water, tucking a hot-water bottle against my feet as my fever broke into violent chills. I drifted between nightmares and an anxiety-riddled awakening.

Narwhal
No legend.
Only heat
where cold should cradle.
The tusk listens, salinity, fracture, ice forgets seasons.
It swims through thinning sheets of absence, a spiral in retreat.
Myth was never shelter.

The hospital ward echoes: soft chatter lulling in flows (a hollow ebb and swell). But my steps leave no marks, no sand captures my passing. Am I really here—in these starched lines? They tell me—think of holidays, the spiced scent of time away; a kind of trick I say. Kind. As I drift. #SenseWrds 139

There is grace buried in this dirt,
its unfamiliar scent and feel
scattered so thinly now.
My brothers used to search for its light,
for a warmth not theirs,
hold moments of its revelation
in hands rubbed raw,
their laughter aglow.
And now?
Sometimes, I feel alone in my nostalgia,
gazing upon our blood-tilled furrows,
generations scattered by time's plough.
Autumn cannot hide its intention,
however fierce the colours glow.
This meadow will not exist forever,
dry stalks left, catching in the wind.

The day lost its #verve, crumpled and ochre, light leeching the brights, mollifying the western flurries, leaving us indifferent and aloof. We follow the patina of yesterday's argument, sipping iced tea, words tracing the horizon with sardonic lines, and longer silences; longer and still. #vss365

Afterwards, the seabirds call
no more, the distant surf's lament
a solemn wash and sigh.
Retracing our ignorance,

we return to the cottage,
its rutilant welcome
hissing in the seawind,
the roof covered in starlings.

“We wanted silence,” you say.
I sip the bitter residue.
Our world,
our planet,
is now silent.
“And theirs?” I say,
words echoing.

My contribution for #PoemsAbout #Candlelight With thanks to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Both circumspect and proud;
I still hold the words you said,
too few and too blunt
to be mistaken.
We bought votives
from cheap corner stores
to both light our sins,
and hear whispered confessions,
our yearning caught
in breathlessly phrased eloquence.
Too poetic perhaps,
too wrapped up in our own importance.
(I hear you draw on a cigarette, blow smoke)
What of them now?
Their reticent touch
still too raw to hold under sunlight.
Sometimes shadows reveal more
about innocence.
Sometimes lies tell us more about truth

The word DANGER is gouged into the wood in a meticulous hand, a careful warning on an otherwise silent #doorway. “A lie,” you say, tracing the first letter. “Ma says—” “Ma lies. It’s always about control.” You pause, your hand on the doorknob. This is our only chance. The latch clicks open. #vss365
