For anyone wondering what to read and be inspired as the autumn evenings draw in, you could do a lot worse than this book ...

What about spellchecker. Folk have been using that for years. Does that count as AI? Where's the line exactly?

My holiday reading this summer was 'The Unconsoled', the only Ishiguro book I hadn't yet read, probably due to its mixed critical reception. My verdict: a masterpiece. If you've previously thrown it aside after a couple of chapters, do pick it up again. You won't regret it.

Personally, I thought the Bridport rejection message, albeit couched with a more positive vibe than others, was still a bit formulaic.

Wayne Rooney spoke for the nation in his blunt assessment of the razzmatazz. I'm also reminded of Chris Martin's appearance in 'Extras', whose cameos could be uncomfortably close to the knuckle. Martin's was one such. He has an ego the size of an aircraft carrier.

Thanks for sharing. I often find Anne Carson a bit obscure, but this is a marvellous poem. Also like the idea of the bad translation.

Well, in the end the final score was almost as good as I'd hoped for. As one viewer on the Guardian blog put it: 'Better beer. Better chocolate. Much better football.'

It's a wonder Infantino never managed to have a quiet word with Trump about a reciprocal favour on behalf of FIFA referee, Omar Artan, 'African Referee of the Year'. But I think we all know how these things work.

Sorry for banging on again about Magma 95 (which I'm in), but I've just discovered there a new rising star on the already impressive Belfast poetry scene, Zara Meadows, whose poem 'Detour' is a cracker. I'll not be looking at the local street murals in the same light again.

A subscriber copy of Magma 95 has just popped through my letter box, plus a 'contributer copy' (my poem 'Donemana' on Page 54). Huge thanks to editors Leo Boix and Stav Poleg. I also love the same page poem by Kitty Donnelly. Those 'gifted bones'.

Set on a north Donegal coastline I've loved for a lifetime, this novel by Derryman Eoghan Walls is a fabulous read, as well as a reminder of a great historical injustice.

JD Vance really did the trick, then, with that timely intervention. Here's hoping he also takes an active interest in the US 'mid terms' when they come up.

Interesting. I will check some of these out. My own list would have to include O'Brien's 'The Third Policeman', one of the funniest books I have ever read, and enough to whet the appetite for a glass of porter.

Services like BBC iPlay are so useful, but sometimes it's like handing me a huge bar of chocolate and expecting me not to devour it in one sitting. I've just done that with 'Small Prophets': an absolute delight!!

Anyone interested in the craft of poetry, editing ones own work, and weaving a poetic pathway with input from peers, could do worse than get David Kalstone's 'Becoming a Poet - Elizabeth Bishop with Marianne Moore and Robert Lowell'. Thanks to North Sea Poets for the recommendation some weeks back.

Two social media posts.

The first is from Keir Starmer and reads: “The UK has long supported a transition of power in Venezuela. We regarded Maduro as an illegitimate President and we shed no tears about the end of his regime. I reiterated my support for international law this morning. The UK government will discuss the evolving situation with US counterparts in the days ahead as we seek a safe and peaceful transition to a legitimate government that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people.”

Below it is a post from Ed Davey that reads: “This cop out isn’t good enough. Standing up for international law means condemning leaders when they break it, whether that’s Vladimir Putin or Donald Trump.”

Always good to listen to Niall Campbell on poetry, from the boy sorting crabs in a fishing village to the time-poor writer-editor of later years. And boy-oh-boy those 30,000 poems he has to sift. Getting into Poetry London must feel like winning the lottery!
