#AMGDMar26 social media prize runner up for yours truly. The content wasn’t strong enough to generate engagement this week. And you’ve got to be all killer and no filler when so many people have given up socials for lent. We do not let this slip, we go to Belfast. More of the same. We go again.
Seminar room with the projector displaying screenshots of the socials posts. My posts referencing benny hill and Heather Small’s Proud (one for the music of the millenium and Miranda fans out there). Winning post from Magdalena.

Brilliant talk from Prof Nick Loman @pathogenomenick.bsky.social looking at the application of the skills we’ve learned this week toward outbreaks and pandemics plus the importance of democratising genomics and bioinformatics!

A late update for Day 5 of #AMGDMar26 on Friday our final day was blessed with beautiful sunshine in B15. A stark contrast to Thursday’s rain and strong winds. Enjoyed wrapping up our top secret task: the disease outbreak scenario 🔬🦠
Bright sunshine with hazy clouds in the sky, view looking out over the car park towards old Joe and University of Birmingham campusBright blue skies above the medical school, small traffic including an sls van sporadic commuters dotted throughout the photoView of the canals beside Snow Hill station, the water reflecting back blue skies and surrounding buildings

#AMGDMar26 Back once again with the very jazzy outputs: colour coordinated (ooooo) and also alongside pangenome work using phandango (aaaaaa). Bairn’s phylogenetic arboretum with trees from a number (3) different coding origins

#AMGDMar26 Bairn’s first phylogenetic tree, please ignore the reflection of the light at one of the nodes it’s not a clade experiencing a damascene intervention it’s purely the reflection from the ceiling.

Day 4 of Analysing Microbial Genomic data #AMGDMar26 Working with Core and Pangenomes and building phylogenetic arboretums. More overcast today and being battered by the wind but lovely conditions for coding!

Utilised the lunchtime walk to visit the market on campus to get some grapes and this walloping slab of Raspberry and Peach cobbler cake. Absolutely zero slump this afternoon, sailed through to coffee and onto home time.
Paper plate with a large beige slice of cake lying on top of it thick cream in the centre of the cake. Slice covers the whole plate. Peach slices and raspberries on the top with cooked peach slices in with the cream centre.

Day2 of #AMGDMar26 brought back my struggles with for loops during PhD bioinformatics training. The morning very much felt like Dr Jon Tickle running on custard getting to grips with sequencing data, quality checks and trimming on a small scale. But by home time I was shovill’ing with the best of em

After some Benny Hill-esque running round New Street finding platforms to take me the ~3 miles in 5 minutes. I arrived in Edgbaston armed with my map and supported by Pharmacy students made it to where I needed to be! Thank you to the UoB students!!

Early start Monday morning to travel down to Birmingham for #AMGDMar26 Intentions of updating the timeline on the train were derailed by having minimal arm space and musical chairs. Nutrition provided by Greggs.

Final WAAW post because, let’s face it, antimicrobial stewardship shouldn’t just be for just one week. The session at Newcastle University @medicalsciencesncl.bsky.social was organised by a group of undergraduates including @microbiologysociety.org champion Eloise. #microbiochamps
Eloise stood behind the Newcastle university lectern. Behind her two screens with white background and green square in bottom left corner, blue square in top right. Microbiology society champions logo top left. Text reads: world antimicrobial awareness week 18th - 24th November.

Fantastic talks across medical students, NHS staff and PhD students. Nice chats with people about their work and wider microbiology. Getting a bit of championing the @microbiologysociety.org in aswell #microbiochamps. Also great see the old haunt in its new form, still as windy as it ever was!

Apple and date slice. Yes. Please. 10/10. Moist filling but a firm base. Crumble on the top. I think that’s pushed the lemon drizzle to the side. It’s certainly outcompeted the NCL carrot cake that’s for sure. It’s been a week, I’m still thinking about it. It’s good stuff don’t miss out.

Three cakes on offer at Manchester. Pink lemonade cake. 7/10. Had two slices one very good, one a bit dry. Averaged the two. Not troubling NCL lemon drizzle. Pink dragonfruit cake. 6/10. Rich icing, but cake itself fell short. It was good but room for improvement.
Two slices of cake, the pink lemonade with pink/purple mottled sides and the Pink Grapefruit beige cake with bright pink icing

We also had great speakers in Anders Aufderhorst-Roberts from Durham and Liverpool and Mark Leake from @physicsoflifeuk.bsky.social discussing experiences and opportunities of interdisciplinary collaboration. Loads to think about from this session and already signposted two people towards PoLNET!

The afternoon focused on interdisciplinary collaboration. Strengthening your networking and how best to sell your expertise and what you need to be a good collaborator. ‘The best research you can do is talk to people!’ was a the first important step to opening collaboration.
