John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 19/08/2026One of my most used homelab services I set up by far is Pterodactyl. When I first set it up two years ago I was mostly doing it as a fun little experiment, but since then I've run so many dedicated game servers on there so easily to play with my family and friends. Such a cool piece of software. 100
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 25/03/2026It’s not a home improvement project unless I go back to the hardware store like 20 times because of all the things I got wrong or forgot. 🤦♂️ 000
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 20/02/2026I'm a huge fan of ServerPartDeals. Not only do I love their manufacturer re-certified hard drives, but their customer service is top notch! Was having some issues and called their support, immediately connected, and they immediately resolved my issue! 10/10 absolutely love that company. #homelab 110
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 04/09/2025Finally got my Z-Wave network set up with the awesome ZWA-2! I absolutely love this thing and decided to write a blog post about my decisions involving choosing Z-Wave and my specific setup using a Pi in a central location with Z-Wave JS UI. johnbwoodruff.com/posts/zwave/ #homelab #homeassistantjohnbwoodruff.comZ-Wave for Home AssistantI bought the Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2 and added it to my Home Assistant by connecting it to a Raspberry Pi in a central location. John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 23/08/2025Stoked to finally get my z-wave network set up! It looks like a paper towel holder but it’s glorious long range z-wave! 😁 #homelab #homeassistant 250
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 11/08/2025I recently released my side project! Novella is a modern, distraction free writing application! I’ve been working on it on and off for years and finally decided to release it. It’s been quite the side project, and I wrote all about it! Check it out if you’d like! johnbwoodruff.com/posts/novella/johnbwoodruff.comNovellaA quick look at my passion project for the last 6 years. A retrospective of my learnings. The good and the bad. 1153
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 22/04/2025I finally decommissioned my Dell R720. I had bought an R730 a bit ago and finally decided I'd had enough of running both. (electricity lol) So after a bunch of VM migrations and a GPU move, I am back down to 1 enterprise server lol! It feels nice. (and hopefully my wallet will thank me) #homelab 140
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 08/04/2025I've currently got one larger VM for my docker apps and use Traefik labeling to get it proxied with SSL. My next #homelab project is I'm going to spin up a few VMs on different machines so they can all be smaller and a little more distributed, then get Traefik hooked up to them. 140
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 07/03/2025This thing is so awesome, I've been using it for all sorts of things to help diagnose issues or make recommendations about managing my Nx workspace. Awesome work by the @nx.dev team! 🎉 160
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 03/03/2025Sometimes you crave cheap pizza. It's a different mood than when you want high quality. I can't stop buying Little Caesar's. Why do I do that to myself, when the vast majority of their pizza is either mediocre or straight up cardboard terrible? Because sometimes I get an absolute God Tier pizza. 120
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 20/02/2025The irony of me doing this one day after posting this meme. 🤣 030

John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 13/02/2025Finally deleted my Twitter account. Kept meaning to over the last year, but never got around to doing it. It was a long time coming. The Bluesky community and platform is better in every way. Excited to be permanently away from all that. 010
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 25/01/2025Ah, the weekend. I bought Manor Lords, it was on my Steam wish list for a while and went on sale. Stoked to start building my quaint medieval village. I'll post back with my initial thoughts after I've played for a bit. 120
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 18/01/2025This mini rack project is so cool. If I was starting a homelab today I would 100% go this route. Not to say my route (or anyone else's route) is bad, but this is awesome having so many amazing options for a compact and low-powered #homelab. github.com/geerlingguy/...github.comGitHub - geerlingguy/mini-rack: Miniature rack builds, for portable or compact Homelabs.Miniature rack builds, for portable or compact Homelabs. - geerlingguy/mini-rack 030

John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 11/01/2025Any suggestions on the best filament respoolers to purchase? I know I can print one of the many designs but honestly that's one thing that I don't really want to print myself. Too many other fun things I want to do to spend all the time and effort to print and assemble one myself haha. #3dprinting 120
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 30/12/2024We’re showing my son The Lord of the Rings movies for the first time. The absolute joy I had finally being able to tell him that Viggo broke his toe when kicking the helmet was nearly too much to bear. IYKYK. I’m in heaven. 130
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 26/12/2024I'm going to give Cursor a proper try for the next couple weeks I have off and use it with my side projects. I'm always less inclined to try new tools at work because I don't want to negatively impact my output while figuring things out. Hoping I'll be blown away and make it my primary tool. 🤞 030
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 12/12/2024I printed my 10y/o son a chess board, he had so much fun picking out the colors and pieces he wanted. Once it was finished then we of course played a game with it together. Listening to cozy music at night near our lit Christmas tree. My favorite use of #3dprinting is things to use with my family. 4351
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 11/12/2024All right I've got a good start put together for an EOL file for my wife in case I pass away unexpectedly. I hope to continually add to it over time as I think of more things I missed, but I believe if I were to get hit by a bus tomorrow she would have the most important things she needs. 140
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 07/12/2024I've been slowly migrating VMs from my R720 over to my R730 in my #homelab. My eventual plan is to decommission the R720 so I'm not running two power hungry servers to inflate my electrical bill. My "critical" workloads will run on the R730 and I hope to get a low powered box for the rest. 240
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 07/12/2024One of my favorite things to 3D print is board game box inserts. There are tons of fantastic models out there for organizing and separating pieces and cards that would otherwise have to go in separate bags or just be thrown in the box. So great. #3dprinting 020
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 02/12/2024I read a comment on Reddit by someone who was talking about their #homelab in the event they died young. It made me consider what that looks like for my family who uses a lot of stuff I’ve set up, but they’d never know how to maintain that or fix issues. It relies on my presence to keep it running. 2100
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 30/11/2024USS Voyager 3D Print. Incredibly happy with how this model turned out! The nacelles even rotate up for warp! The print profiles were great and I did very minimal cleanup. Super excited to print some of the other ships too! #3dprinting 3402
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 26/11/2024When I first started out building my #homelab I felt really self conscious about my single Raspberry Pi sitting on my desk when I would see the posts on r/homelab with the full datacenters some people are running. It's really easy to compare where you're at to others thanks to social media. 3191
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 25/11/2024Been printing some fidget toys for a local therapists office. They’re all small easy prints so they’re fun to do in between bigger projects. It also lets me use up filaments that only have small amounts left so that’s nice. #3dprinting 020
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 24/11/2024Update on my Proxmox backup issue. I have two nodes in a cluster and it's worked fine since I set it up but I didn't get around to setting up my qdevice for quorum voting. Well it wasn't affecting anything else so I didn't think of that as the issue, but that ended up being the issue. #homelab 420
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 22/11/2024Tonight’s #homelab adventure includes fixing my Proxmox nightly backup job that’s failed for the last few weeks. No idea why it started failing but hopefully tonight we’ll find out! Would hate for my server to crash and have my last backups be weeks ago lol. 120
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 20/11/2024Days of printing but it’s finally done! The BLV AMS Riser! Printed with white and black PETG, as well as black TPU for the gaskets. Absolutely stoked with how it turned out! I’m super glad I stuck with it despite the long print times. Highly recommend the model. #3dprinting 1151
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 20/11/2024Doing my first TPU print! I installed a Y Splitter for the external spool so I don’t need to disconnect the AMS, and I’m really happy how it turned out. So now I’m printing from my dryer to keep things super dry during the print. Never printed TPU before. Wish me luck! 😅 #3dprinting 3120

Great coverage and Ethernet ports in the IWAPs. #homelab 150
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 19/11/2024No picture this time but I’m done with the four main pieces and am now working my way through the various smaller accessory pieces. Two rolls of PETG down, working through the 3rd. Not a print for the faint of heart that’s for sure! 🤣 030

John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 16/11/2024Currently halfway through an 18 hour print, part 1 of many, with Bambu PETG-HF. I’m printing the BLV AMS Riser. It’s a big print but I love all the features. I dried my filament so it’s looking ✨crisp✨. Model: makerworld.com/en/models/19... #3dprinting 030
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 15/11/2024No suggestions yet so here’s what I’ve got so far. My dashboard is all bubble cards because I love the look. I added a card with some “current status” info like percent complete, nozzle temp, and current layer. Also a button in the header to toggle the chamber LED. Pretty happy so far. #homelab 120
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 14/11/2024I recently got a Bambu Lab P1S, and I just got it integrated into Home Assistant. Anyone have any good dashboard card suggestions for 3D Printers they love? Not exactly sure what I want to do with all the entities yet so looking for inspiration! #homelab #3dprinting #homeassistant 480

John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 11/11/2024Does anyone know how to disable that MacOS gesture where you drag your window to the top but quickly it opens Mission Control view to put the window somewhere? It's a nice concept but it directly interferes with new window snapping so when I mean to snap it instead goes to a random space. 100
John Woodruff @johnbwoodruff.com · 11/11/2024I loaded up Xitter today just to see what was going on over there. The difference was astounding. Bluesky is better in every way. It was a cesspool of alt right rage accounts and bot accounts posting stolen content for engagement farming. Confirmation that I’m in the right place over here. 💙🦋💙 000
