I love it when somebody makes constructive comments on my writing. Because then I get to: 1. Roll my eyes at their suggestions. 2. Decry every decision both they and I have ever made. 3. Admit their suggestions are good and make the writing better. 4. Ask them to make comments on the next draft.

Vannevar Bush's The Endless Frontier is worth a read for anyone who works in or around science. It's not a perfect document, of course. I often doodle little comics to put into my kid’s lunchbox. They are a fantastic artist, so I get some art criticism on the way home from school as a treat. Here are a few from this week, with a bonus picture of the real life Meatball (orange) and Greta (grey).

A strange picture of a parachutist (my kid) and two cats flying through the air. I redacted my kid’s name but the cats are depicted in ways that fit their weird little personalities. This is today’s comic, so I have gotten any criticism on it yet.

Some wierd little fruit guys and a confused kiwi bird. The critique of this one was that the caption doesn’t mention that the fancy orange has a monocle.

A super onion like a Super Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog. Mostly this was a long walk to a bad “onion ring” pun. The critique of this: “The joke about crying at the sight of on an onion was not centered enough”.

An orange cat (Meatball) and a gray cat (Greta). The orange is sweet but has exactly one brain cell. The gray thinks she is a kitten.

I made $6.75 as a library page in 2002, which was minimum wage in Massachusetts at the time. Then I worked at a Hollywood Video, also for $6.75 an hour (plus free dvd rentals).
