“I went down the steps into the breathless garden, my knees were like reflections of knees in rippling water, and my lips were like sand, and—‘That was my Lo,’ she said, ‘and these are my lilies.’ ‘Yes,’ I said, ‘yes. They are beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!’” 1st US edition of Lolita OTD in 1958.
This is the cover of Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita” first published in the US by G. P. Putnam’s Sons on August 18 1958.

Post you from a different era in your life. (Paisley Revival Period, 1985)

“If the mark of a movie’s art is its staying power—its resurgence in memory long after viewing—then ‘Columbus’ is a classic for the frequency with which the tones and moods of its performances and images come to mind.” Richard Brody’s 2025 New Yorker piece on Columbus released on this date in 2017.

No, this is not a photo by Nan Goldin. It’s a self portrait by the great photographer William Eggleston (BOTD) from the early ’70s. Untitled (Self Portrait in Bed, Eyes Open) 1970-73
The photographer William Eggleston lays in bed, head on the pillow, gazing into the camera. Does he look bored? Seductive? You decide.

“From the first, she was interesting to watch. Even the way she walked in for her interview, casually sat down, walked out. She was cool and non-giggly. She was enigmatic. She could keep people guessing about how much Lolita knew about life.” “Lolita” director Stanley Kubrick on Sue Lyon-BOTD

Lyon, on the bed, is staring at him suggestively.Sue Lyon, looking contemplative, resting hand and head on a bedpost in a scene from “Lolita.” Sue Lyon in her famous introductory scene from “Lolita,” wearing bathing suit and wide sunhat. She’s looking at the camera with an enigmatic, slight smile.Director Stanley Kubrick and star Sue Lyon on the set of “Lolita.” Lyon is wearing the bathing suit she wears in the first scene of the film, and Kubrick is smoking. Drop an album that was important to you when you were 19. Muttered vocals. Indecipherable lyrics. Inscrutable cover image (a ghostly B&W photo of kudzu). Beautiful lead singer of indeterminate sexual orientation. I was in love.

My kind, beautiful, perfect Mother would’ve turned 100 today. She lived until 2019, anxiously awaiting the day she got to vote “that creature” out of office in 2020. She would be horrified to learn that he was re-elected last year, but not crushed. Nothing crushed this amazing, indomitable woman.

Halloween, ‘66, the Blanco home. An angel, an “old lady,” wearing an aunt’s dress from the olden days of the ‘50s, and whatever costume my sister Gina had just doffed. There’s an inherent eeriness and pathos to old Halloween photos, old family photos in general, even when my face is filled with joy.
