Republicans in Congress got hours of free airtime in front of the American people. They spent it stating false facts as true and calling Jack Smith a dirtbag and a villain. Here's all you need to know, under oath.

Another cult member who can't admit that #Trump is ever wrong, even when confronted with clear evidence that she can't deny (and despite the endless barrage of lies). This is the calibre of person that the #GOP appoint to important positions that should be non-partisan. #MAGACult

He failed to stand up for others, and in doing so enabled suppression of #FreeSpeech. He created a situation where boycotting him supports freedom of speech, and Palestine, and I think that such a boycott is justified. /5 #EdSheeran

It seems that he just feared losing revenue. He could well afford the loss of revenue, more so than any of the acts that pulled out. He was put in a difficult position, not wanting to take sides. He's entitled to not take sides, but it doesn't seem to me, to be a principled decision. /4

He cites the fact that there are children watching as a reason for not taking sides, but I don't see how saying "free Palestine" would adversely affect children (some just wouldn't know what he was talking about). /3

Contrast how the Beetles stood up for moral clauses with #EdSheeran. I don't think Sheeran supports the Israeli genocide or genuinely thinks that the morality or otherwise of the genocide is "the most complex political issue on the planet". /1

Even Fox had to, to keep up the pretence of being a news outlet, or of supporting #FreeSpeech. (It would be especially ironic if they didn't support freedom of speech while constantly using it to spread their disinformation.)

We have to watch any that are not banned closely to assess whether they have compromised their values. And don't forget, this ( #FreeSpeech ) is what we're voting on in the midterms. #GOP candidates cannot absolve themselves of responsibility, after keeping #Trump in power. /5

After banning 3 networks for doing their job in holding the administration to account, the #Trump administration is clearly threating the remaining ones. Being banned is an indication that an organisation is not afraid to report the truth when it is unfavorable to Trump. /4 #FreeSpeech #GOP

And polls suggest that a majority of the public is interested or concerned about corruption. 92% negative coverage is reflective of reality. The free press (internationally) was negative about Hitler too. #MAGAs can't distinguish between lies and things that just aren't favorable to #Trump. /3

and they're entitled to do that. The problem is their lying and disinformation. #FreeSpeech means that each network is free to choose what stories it reports, and their choices probably reflect their viewers interests. /2

Story selection bias was never a valid reason to exclude a news organisation. It's not why Breitbart was excluded. Moral people consider political corruption and illegality (inc. the Epstein files) to be newsworthy. #Fox and Breitbart might consider a minor favorable story to be more newsworthy, /1

rather than wait until they will probably lose the House (and so won't be able to give it, making the promise moot). While the bribe is unlikely to swing both houses, there could be enough stupid people to swing a few seats, and maybe make the #GOP retain a majority in the Senate. /2 #5000bribe

#Trump loves uneducated. This promise is aimed at people who are not only stupid enough to believe that he would keep the promise, but also stupid enough to not see that it would be very bad for them if he did keep it. /9
222
John Lambe @johnblambe.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
But who would benefit? Those who own a lot of real estate, certain stocks, gold, etc. could benefit from high inflation - not the people the $5000 bribe is aimed at (the $5000 would be negligible to these people). /8

disproportionately affecting the less well off. And it doesn't make sense to believe that #Trump will pay this unless you believe that he will also pay the other $8700 he promised, and if he did that, the effect would be vastly worse. /7

John Lambe @johnblambe.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Assuming he paid only citizens resident in the US (he said "in the United States"), it would cost about $1.25 trillion, massively increasing debt and probably increasing the federal government's cost of borrowing. Some of it would probably be paid for by large cuts in public services, /6
120
John Lambe @johnblambe.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Those who might vote for #GOP because of this would end up worse off because of it, due to the increased cost of everything, outweighing the once-off $5000 of devalued currency. And that's without even considering the effects that GOP policy in general will have on the less well off. /5
121
John Lambe @johnblambe.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
The inflationary effect now would be much more than 4.16 times that. It would devalue the US dollar. It would be further devalued by people not having confidence that the US wouldn't behave stupidly in future: Holding US dollars would be seen as risky. /4

John Lambe @johnblambe.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
- If the GOP did win both houses and #Trump somehow kept the promise, the effect on the economy would be disastrous. We saw the inflation caused by $1200 stimulus checks during the pandemic, and that was mitigated by the economy being suppressed by the pandemic. /3 #Trump #GOP
