It’s a weird time to work in system verification/FM. Verifying an OS kernel is possible three months (arxiv.org/abs/2609.04043) and everyone wants to secure systems from the infinite red-team robots but very few people are aware of both or even know what correctness means for a given domain. 🫠

Which is all to say we should still do it I’m just convinced it’s less likely to happen and less likely to matter now even when it does 😔

The internet has muted this and reduced its frequency for people who need it most. Why go out into the world and get embarrassed publicly when you can stay home and vibe with other idiots like yourself online?

I do think it’s and interesting that Waymo has been extremely cautious in its rollout of an autonomous agent because they clearly understand that negative PR might kill the project but here they seem to be very cavalier up to and including crimes

With no consequences for these incidents I worry it sets a precedent that we won’t hold people accountable for bad machine decisions taken under their supervision. Is this because we think of it like a person making a mistake instead of a manager making a choice? www.axios.com/2026/09/19/g...

SysMLv2 seems poised to have a similar sort of ambiguity though at least there will be an executable semantics however convoluted.

Maybe not but I suspect we’ll get pretty close in the end. If precision and tight checks on implementation matter mathematical specs will be a super power.

I strongly suspect we are going to suffer from a “dude who cried paperclips” problem for the average person who’s been hearing that AI will end the world for a while now. We’d be better off focusing on the upstream, solvable, immediate issue of verified containment software.

Verified containment software is probably too expensive and time consuming. Meanwhile: techcrunch.com/2026/09/14/o... (And also it now takes two months to verify an OS kernel from scratch) 🤷

The verification of an OS kernel using a bespoke concurrent separation logic in roughly two months qualifies for me as a killer app/quality software and it marks the first time I’ve been really worked up about the state of AI. arxiv.org/abs/2609.04043

The Hugging Face hack is bothering me a lot. I think the reason is that I have a detailed understanding of the effort and scale that would be required to actually provide certainty in containment and I don’t see evidence that these companies, despite their resources, are willing to do it.

Risk/reward calculations sharpen with the development of one’s executive function. Which is to say giving people drivers licenses before 20 is, looking back on my very similar experience as evidence, fairly insane.

I feel like required pedal assist and a top speed capped at 20 (Class 1) is the obvious choice for the definition of “e-bike”? Everything else should be treated like a moped?

Clearly there is an acknowledgment of a memory model (they reference SC for certain operations) but the story of memory models is a painful process of iterating to a peace between implementers and users which has resulted in bad outcomes. As evidence see the absurdity of any mainstream memory model.

When people spoke about the possibilities of the early internet it was unforeseeable that the ability for random people to just say whatever stupid thing they thought of that day over breakfast and have it reach millions of people would be this mind meltingly stupid and destructive.
