I wonder if this would be improved with the new MFD Chief, former Fire Chief and head of EMS of NEOM, the fake city in Saudi Arabia that killed tens of thousands of workers. Did Frey pick Freeman for his record? Freeman inherited this particular problem but he seems to have acceptable losses.

Senate Ways and Means chair criticizes incentives
Stephen Gruber-Miller
Sen. Dan Dawson, R-Council Bluffs, who chairs the Senate Ways and Means Committee, criticized the legislation in a fiery speech on the Senate floor.
He said it could be more than 10 years before Mesabi Metallics pays any taxes in Iowa and the incentive package would amount to roughly $880,000 per job produced.

Senator decries 'dirty politics' after 2
GOP peers removed from key committee
Marissa Payne

Sen. Dave Sires, R-Cedar Falls, decried Republican leadership's removal of two of his colleagues' from the tax-writing committee as "dirty politics" to advance the steel mill project.
Sires issued a statement Friday saying Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Klimesh, R-Spillville, removed Republican Sens.
Jeff Taylor of Sioux Center and Dawn Driscoll of Williamsburg from the chamber's tax-writing Ways and Means Committee Oct. 2 after they told him they would vote no on the incentives.
Members of the Iowa Senate Ways and Means Committee early Friday afternoon voted 10-8 to advance the MEGA incentives bill to full committee, with two Republicans, Sens. Dan Dawson of Council Bluffs and Jason Schultz of Schleswig, joining the committee's six Democrats to oppose the legislation in subcommittee.
"In other words, the bill would have died in committee today, but it was saved by dirty politics," said Sires, who opposes the legislation. "Whether you are for or against the bill as it stands is irrelevant. Every Iowan should be concerned with this strong arming."

Many unprecedented things have to happen and keep happening for the next 3 years for this project to make sense. It’s not happening, because it *shouldn’t* happen. $1.5b would go a long way to address environmental health disasters currently impacting the state.

alex @johnbadman.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
On top of that, the steel mill proposal is only economically viable considering the current 50% tariff on foreign steel. And Iowa doesn’t have 1700 skilled steelworkers to fill these jobs. And Iowa doesn’t seem to have the finances to hand out $1.5b to get it back after over a dozen years.

They definitely don’t need them, but my guess is the president’s eagerness for a deal before the midterms probably means Iowa gets an even worse deal. I mean it doesn’t seem like the deal could even be final yet.

This is the company that is pushing Iowa to have a special session to give them some “extremely expensive” incentives this year. If that session doesn’t happen, this project might immediately go up in smoke. Just like those “commitments” from China to buy Iowa soybeans.
