Day 23 of posting cool mushrooms every day: Corn smut (Ustilago maydis) is a fungal infection of corn. The masses you see on the corn below are, essentially, tumors! Once it is harvested it is called "Huitlacoche." It is a delicacy in Mexico. It is sometimes even cultivated intentionally!

A yellow sweetcorn lays on a table. On top of it, there is a giant grey, puffy and almost soft-looking tumors of mold. There are several individual tumors, about a dozen in total, and they take up a significant amount of space on the corn.
