I was thinking they might start putting out a mini every three iterations or so - hasn’t happened yet. (The SE used to be small too) I should have gone with a refurbed 13-mini.

I had to get rid of my 12-mini a few months ago and I *hate* the bigger thing.

Oh no! Hope you’re feeling better soon Ann. (Getting my shots on Monday, have luckily avoided anything so far).

Maigret #29. The retired/unretired see-sawing continues and Maigret is back on the job. Again the device of a predicted crime that isn’t picked up in time — a body dumped in Place de la Concorde sets Maigret on the trail of a vicious Czech gang. Striking but (unusually for Simenon) rather too long.
Maigret’s Dead Man by Georges Simenon.

He also came up in one of those Haughey/Mara sketches on Scrap Saturday, with Haughey referring to him as “John Thomas”.

Both sides, but mayo instead of butter.

Yes, Raging Bull and Barry Lyndon, side by side in the 80s!

Not much for me to foam about, in fairness. If I were told that any one of those was included, my reaction would mostly be “fair enough”. It also doesn’t think (admirably in a list of this type) that cinema began in the 1990s. I might pick 60+ of these in my own list.

I don’t know why the IT persists with this framing when the ‘rugby stars’ own less than 4% of the shares.

Maigret #28. An ironic title, as it’s anything but a holiday for Maigret at the resort town of Les Sables-d’Olonne, where his wife is hospitalised with appendicitis and two young girls die in questionable circumstances. A depressing story of jealousy, control and the murky side of human nature.

That was also the first one that occurred to me. I would have liked to see Babylon Berlin there, but not surprised by its omission. One that does surprise is For All Mankind.

I have cycled both and prefered the M1. If I were in the market for one, I’d definitely be trying to find the extra cash.

One of them has the front wheel drive R1 model and the other has the mid-motor M1. There’s more torque with the latter if you can afford the extra.

Two friends have them and both are extremely satisfied.

Maigret #27. The ‘fish out of water’ stories are always a treat, much of the entertainment coming from Maigret’s discomfort with his surroundings. Swayed by a young man to accompany him to N. Y. over a family matter, he finds himself navigating a puzzle that stretches back decades, now resurfaced.

…’And the forty little heavier-than-air people, fallible within its larger fallibility, vain within its larger vanity, fall down with it and make little holes in the land or little splashes in the sea.’

Ian Fleming doing his best to reassure those who dislike flying: ‘‘…when those or many things happen, then the little warm room with propellers in front falls straight down out of the sky into the sea or on to the land, heavier than air, fallible, vain’…

I watched it a few years ago and for some reason the song is still lodged in my head.

Just to note that the Warner Archive Collection blu-ray of the ‘44 includes the ‘40 as an extra.

(The biggest head scratcher is my inability to see Jon Voight is his portrayal of Howard Cosell, for which I suppose he deserves some credit - begrudgingly).

Catching up on one I missed all those years ago and it’s…fine, too long and padded out with musical montages that should have been cut. I grew up on this stuff and idolised Ali in my youth but unfortunately Smith doesn’t really capture the man, despite a decent performance. Should have been better.

Maigret #26. Again retired, Maigret investigates a suspicious drowning and finds himself confronting a former classmate who regards his old friend as a bumpkin. The ‘anger’ is a reaction to snobbery and privilege, as M’s sympathies, as usual, are more aligned with the powerless and the working poor.
Maigret Gets Angry by Georges Simenon.

Unusual noir-ish drama - career criminal turns informer, but then informs on the wrong guy. Unsurprisingly, Widmark’s psycho-killer debut made him a star (and maybe also fixed his screen persona). My only problem is Mature, an actor I never took to (his Doc Holiday excepted). Some original touches.

I’ve just gone into the chat settings and new chats were completely disabled (I didn’t do it). I’ve fixed that but no difference, so maybe the App has done it to you too?

It’s going on the in-tray for viewing over the next few weeks. Middling Expectations.

Me neither. I see it’s a ‘modernisation’, so perhaps the cover really does capture the mood. Of the more recent ones, I’ve just seen the Fiennes and the Winstone (Who played Magwitch is the only way I know if I’ve seen it)

And if I remember correctly, you have both also watched the Petzold take on this, Jerichow? (Though his targets are completely different - racism, reintegration of the new Germany etc)

This seems to me the most logical reason why it became the norm. Largely irrelevant now, and I swap my Apple Watch from wrist to wrist for the sake of my skin but occasionally the crown being on the ‘wrong’ side is annoying.

If you’re ever in Mallow they deserve your business!

John Daly @johdal.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
I wouldn’t do without them, I have a great local in Sandycove. In passing, I’ve just had such a good experience in a small Mallow pub. We go in, order two Murphy’s - ‘sorry lads, the Murphys is off’, so we go for two Guinness. Then for round two, ‘the Murphys is back on lads - it’s on the house’.

Of course I’m also recommending the entire ‘four seasons’ quartet to which it belongs. (And the later Antoine Doinel films - the future life of the lad from 400 Blows)

It seems it is now called A Tale of Winter — I suppose to avoid Shakespeare confusion.

Feck, Rohmer and Truffaut, my two go-to favourites! Recommending one at a time for each, I’ll start with The Bride Wore Black and The Green Ray.
