Day Three - Dread #octobermymuse

A poem called DREAD.

“It’s just a painting.”
Maybe that’s what you see.
“It’s a pretty painting, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not something to-”
To what? Cry about?
“I’m sorry. It’s important to you.”
Hm. That’s one way to put it.
“What does it make you feel, then? When you look at this?”
I stare for a long time.
The washed out shipyard.
The shadows on the water.
I breathe in deeply.
“It makes me feel…”
That tiny orange dot.
I smile, but it’s not intentional.
It’s something else, someone else’s emotion,
plucked raw and plastered onto my face where it doesn’t fit.
It doesn’t belong.
But my face doesn’t change.
“Dread.”

Day Two - Witch #octobermymuse

A Poem called Witch.

Asha stared into the cauldron, searching for anything:
an answer, a solution, a remedy…
At this point, she would even accept a question.
A question would be some reply greater than this struggle against nothing at all.
She took a deep breath and tried to recall the words once more.
She quickly gave up, because who knows their Latin like that?
High Priestess did, of course. Asha did not.
She turned to other avenues, like a car searching for parking;
The cauldron room was downtown New York City.
Her eyes ran circles and further circles over useless and further useless garbage.
Why did she even join a coven?
Peer pressure?
She laughed that away.
You need peers to be pressured by them.
She just wanted to be involved in something greater than herself:
a concept as noble as it was naive.
Well, she got what she wanted.
She was involved as you could be now.
Think, Asha, think.
Then it hit her like a bullet.
She started scrambling, clambering, falling over herself in a whirlwind.
The book.
Every spell, incantation, possible utterance in front of this stupid pot-
it was all in the fucking book!
She just needed to open it,
flip the pages,
drop it into the cauldron

She was not supposed to drop it into the cauldron.

She blinked.
She cried.
Somewhere, High Priestess had probably already died.
Asha was never joining a club again.

Day One - Fear #octobermymuse

A poem titled FEAR.

No one is actually afraid of the dark.
Each of us spends more than a third of our lives in darkness.
Every time we blink, every time we sleep.
Of course, that’s not what people mean when they say they’re ‘afraid of the dark.’
But even then, when people say that, they don’t mean the dark itself.

They mean what might be in it.

What they’re really afraid of is the unknown.
The unseen.
The unheard.
The invisible.

Maybe they should bring a light?

If the only thing you’re afraid of is the dark,
identifying a rabid animal in the dark is simple.
If push comes to shove,
you can kick it.

But that third of our lives asleep,
that’s what scares me.

When I sleep,
I am unseen,
unheard,
and invisible.

When I dream, I am afraid
of what might be in it.

And in that darkness,
there is no light to save me,
and no rabid dog
to kick.
