Right, what could a distinguished professor of computational linguistics possibly understand or have to say about large language models? Journalists should only listen to people who work at companies selling the technology.
Quoted skeet says journalists should not be seeking comment from Prof Emily Bender

For Gen X men, 50% of AI comments are positive, while 42% of comments from Gen X women are negative. Millennial men’s comments are 44% positive, while women’s are 33% positive. Gen Z men are 42% positive, while Gen Z women are 21% positive. Differences in industry and occupation explain the gender gap for Gen X workers entirely, while explaining only one third of the gender gap for Millennials. Occupation and industry explain none of the gender gap in AI sentiment for Gen Z workers

I saw the first graph and was like yeah yeah ok, it's probably just a sample composition changing over time. Then I saw the second graph 😬 www.glassdoor.com/blog/how-wor...
Graph shows portion of Glassdoor reviews that mention "AI" by sentiment, positive vs negative, with percent negative rising from 15 in 2019 to 53 in 2026Graph shows share of Glassdoor reviews that mention AI or LLMs, it's up from less than 0.1 percent of reviews in 2022 to around 2.5 percent of reviews in 2026

The new Claude Fable model found an error in my 2024 NeurIPS paper (jk) by constructing a counterexample DAG with a "direct edge from A to a grandchild" -- which my wife immediately named the Woody Allen DAG
Claude acknowledging its own error: "Freezing the children or all descendants gives the same counterfactual for both the NDDP and the NIDP: every directed path from A to a later descendant passes through a child, so the rest recompute identically. My "direct edge from A to a grandchild" case is incoherent — such a node is a child."

Celebrating drinking (a tiny bit of) caffeinated coffee for the first time in a while
Classic meme that says "Drink coffee. Do stupid things faster with more energy" but it says "Use generative AI" instead

One of the funniest "AI" fails I've seen A benchmark where humans score ~90% and the current top frontier lab models max out at ~50% Billions of dollars worth of compute on top of stealing the entire internet, and they still can't read clocks clockbench.ai

Obama had such an aura of decency… it really let you just ignore that he was caging and deporting families, bombing 7 countries, expanding fossil fuel extraction, assassinating US citizens, letting lobbyists shape Obamacare, bailing out and not investigating Wall Street, imprisoning whistle blowers

Lazily googling to find the title of a Poe story instead of going to my bookshelf Instead of directing me to A Tale of the Ragged Mountains (good), google generates an imitation of a Poe story (🫥)

This is so much more scandalous than some UCs offering remedial math courses But somehow I won't be surprised if the same journos and pundits who're so concerned about "woke" lowering standards are silent about this www.nber.org/system/files...

I'm getting cautiously optimistic that the AI insanity will be ended soon by (1) a deluge of lawsuits and (2) society in general learning that it's bullshit on.ft.com/3M4Y61L www.nytimes.com/2025/11/12/b...

This is what I've been saying since 2023 (image below) "prediction: use of "AI" [...] will come to be broadly associated with cheating, deception, lack of respect for other people, and low quality work that cannot be trusted in important settings"

I'm guessing the general pattern is that these DOGE losers asked "grok" to summarize/search documents for them, didn't check any details, then made life and death decisions based on "hallucinations"

google AI is like google maps (created >20 years ago) but built on trillions of dollars of intellectual property theft, billions in environmentally costly computation, and also wrong (the A6 connects Belfast and Derry, the M1 does not)
google's "AI" confidently stating that the M1 is a motorway connecting Belfast to Derry

Hilariously, this actually shows the insurance industry is still not willing to underwrite the *baseline* risks of "AI" tools It will only cover a drop in performance, e.g. from 5% errors to 15% errors. Hence if it stays constant at baseline those 5% errors won't be covered
