Emerging from my marking bubble to say f* this. And him. And his cretinous team. Luxon said the goal was to "brutally commercialise our science system". "I want professors to become millionaires because they're partnering with entrepreneurs..." www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

We are going through change processes but never fear, we have a workshop offering: "a practical, energising approach to navigating change with confidence" through "guided self‑reflection, hands‑on tools", we can "maintain momentum in a fast‑evolving environment". 🙄
Text for workshop says The pace of change can be daunting and challenges us to consider whether there are better ways to approach change.

This workshop offers a practical, energising approach to navigating change with confidence. Through guided self‑reflection, hands‑on tools, and real-world examples, you’ll gain fresh insights into how to adapt, stay resilient, and maintain momentum in a fast‑evolving environment.

Wanted to watch Auckland FC's winning goals on Stuff but had to sit through a Luxon ad telling me what a wonderful job he's doing for this country. Twice. Such a good incentive to stick with RNZ for early morning news updates #nzpol

I often spend WFH time with a view of this tree. Every couple of hours, a flock of 20 little birds visit the tree for a feed. Mostly tauhou but often two piwakawaka join them. You can't see them in this photo but they're there. In these awful times it's nice to focus on little happy moments 🌳 🍂
View of a Japanese maple tree in all its autumnal glory of red and orange leaves. Blue sky peeks through the branches. This is not where I actually see the tree from but my windows really need a clean so I popped outside for the photo

As someone who has taught in the university sector for 35 years - primarily in the social sciences - this is all depressingly familiar. It's sometimes hard to find the motivation to keep going.

NZ Govt has taken a huge bet on fossil fuels. NZ was already spending $8 billion a year importing fossil fuels, and now the global fuel crisis is going to make that worse. Betting on fossil fuels has turned out to be a losing bet for NZ. This is the 14 point policy record of 2 years of the NZ Govt:

Today at my local Farmers Market the baker/pie maker declared fuel prices will come down now "because of the great work Trump is doing for us". Usually I attempt diplomatic responses (a side effect of having much of what I say recorded), but not this time: "that's fucking bullshit!!" I declared 😁

As wealth concentrates, so does power — the power to influence elections, shape policy, tilt markets and define the terms of public debate. Taxing billionaires is not radical. What is radical is allowing a system where extreme wealth exists alongside widespread hardship.

One staple of childhood Christmas was 'carrot jelly'. Grated carrot and parsley set in lemon jelly. SUCH a dish of the 70s, when everything had to be in a jelly mold. Actually, I think I've just inspired myself to make it again this Christmas.
