One of the moments in gaming that changed it from something fun and casual into something serious and hardcore was back on 360 when I joined a gaming community in Call of Duty/Halo. It was only about 3k people but it was global and a community. Some of my closest IRL friends were met there.

Remember, we all have our own interests, likes and dislikes. Just because someone doesn't like something you like, doesn't mean its an attack on you. And vice versa. I hate mushrooms. If you love them, that doesn't mean I think you have bad taste. Same goes for games, shows, movies and music.
