This is what Turing’s statue looks like on his birthday ❤️
Alan Turing’s statue in Manchester surrounded by lots of bunches of flowers and some pots of flowers. Most are on the bench and some are on the floor.

I personally think everybody should have to take a new profile picture everytime they want to post so that we can see what they look like when having these moans.
I have stubble, blotchy face, very tired eyes and for some reason today I am very asymmetrical

Toast which has one quater just margerine, one quarter just jam, one quarter just peanut butter, and one quarter both.

Nova and I went stargazing last night. I've wanted to take her for ages and clouds kept foiling me. It was awesome! We saw Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Sirius, Orion's belt, lots of planes, and a bunch of other stuff, which was pretty good considering it was still quite cloudy.

In an attempt to get the kids (7 and 4) a bit more interested in 'tasting' I picked up as many different varieties of apples as I could (6) and we did a full taste test as a family. Bramley was a surprise for everybody 🤣

This is staggering…
A passage on a study by Laming (1990) on the reliability of marking in higher education. It examined the marks given by pairs of blind markers for university examination answers. The correlations between the markers’ scores ranged from 0.47 to 0.72 in one year and from 0.13 to 0.37 in the second

It sat in the garage for at least two years but I'm finally starting to play with my arduino! I've got a project, a plan, a list of things I need to do and I am looking forward to getting distracted and forgetting about the whole thing for several more years.

I mention my email about once a week, but I also think it's important (indeed, more so) to make sure I have replied to, like, my actual friends? And like it's strange that we talk about 'inbox zero' and not 'I have probably emotionally connected to the thing that was festering in my dms'
and emtpy whatsapp inbox.

I have a speeding offense (which I am mortified about) and so had to fill out the online form for Single Justice Procedure. It turns out if you put in a link to dashcam footage into the 'mitigations' box you get this message, which doesn't feel like the _best_ approach to evidence gathering.

Technically the university library has online access to this book but I have to honestly ask... Does it? I'm downloading the relevent app (1.2 of 5 stars on the app store...) but am very ready to be angry about it...
"Screenshot showing the availability of an online book through an institution. The options include: 'Read Online,' 'Download Book,' and 'Download PDF Chapter.' For 'Read Online,' it mentions 23 pages remaining for copy out of 23. For 'Download Book,' it allows downloading all pages for up to 1 day using third-party software. For 'Download PDF Chapter,' it allows downloading up to 92 pages, which can be used with any PDF software and does not expire. The 'Download PDF Chapter' option indicates 92 pages remaining out of 92."

From 1953. Could have been written today but not because today is worse: it’s because it’s very human to confuse “the world is falling apart” with “I have entered my thirties”

Struggling to believe that apparently no proofreader was like “isn’t everybody going to just think ‘ice’ immediately?”
The image contains a passage with the following section highlighted:

“I may not, perhaps, be forgiven for introducing sober matters with a frivolous notion, but the problem of making sense out of the seeming chaos of experience reminds me of my childish desire to send someone a parcel of water in the mail. The recipient unties the string, releasing the deluge in his lap. But the game would never work, since it is irritatingly impossible to wrap and tie a pound of water in a paper package. There are kinds of paper which won’t disintegrate when wet, but the trouble is to get the water itself into any manageable shape, and to tie the string without bursting the bundle.”

This foreword continues to be wild.
The image features a passage from a text, with the following section highlighted:

“Where the Buddha refused to answer questions about the existence of God, Watts is more inclined to smash idols. He uses modern physics as proof that there is no evidence for the physical existence of God, arguing that no such proof will ever be offered (a reckless prediction, but how could Watts have anticipated post-quantum theories that posit a universe imbued with infinite intelligence?).”

Amazing paragraph (the book is from the 1950s, but this is a forward to a later edition)
The image contains a passage from a text with the following highlighted section:

“For an eccentric to dabble in Eastern thought was acceptable in his native England. Because it possessed India and strong footholds in China, England produced some minds who were willing to delve deeper into Vedanta and Buddhism than the usual blinkered colonialist.”
