*Eye, Amsterdam* One of my concepts in architectural photography is to approach what I call the Max. Point of Perspective: getting as close as possible to an object with the lens shifted to its max. position while keeping verticals straight. The purpose is distortion and use of functional space

Pantheon, Rome 2014 "Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes." - CG Jung Click the alt text for my thoughts on the importance of introspection when creating art.
In my fine art photography teachings I’m emphasizing that one of the defining elements of fine art is that there should be an interaction between the artist and the object or scene photographed. In portraiture this part is easy to understand: the portrait becomes meaningful through an interaction between sitter and artist that is both verbal and non-verbal. When the subject is inanimate, the interaction is mostly non-verbal, but the verbal interaction should still be there as an internal interaction. The verbal interaction is introspection. My premise is that the most important interaction is an internal interaction - introspection. A verbal and external interaction would just be superficial if not at the same time rooted in, and guided and informed by an internal interaction. A lack of words doesn’t imply a lack of meaning but a lack of internal interaction often results in a lack of meaning. The internal interaction is essentially the emotional connection that gives substance and meaning to a photograph.

Windblown “I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.” -Max Planck, Physicist Click the alt text for my thoughts on art
Art is consciousness manifested >
The artist is always self-proclaimed. It is not an external acknowledgment. Once we as artists have defined for ourselves what art is, we can articulate it and manifest it through our art and we can proclaim it. Nothing or no one, has the authority to reject or to confirm our proclamation if our definition and manifestation of art and the self-imposed rules constricting it are derived from the authentic representation and fundamental belief of who we are and what we experience through introspection. One’s consciousness can only be accessed by the one with that consciousness. No one can therefore lay any claim that one’s consciousness is different than the artist is manifesting and proclaiming. The artist’s word is true if you live by and embody your ‘definition’ and rules. And stand by it.

Aqua Building Chicago 2013 I'm now here for around 5 days and I think I like it, especially compared to Twitter/X. Still missing various essential things here and there's also some doubt on which I will elaborate in the future. Or maybe not.

St Mary's Cathedral Tokyo 2024 Up-close shot with a TS lens shifted up. In the comments section you see the image taken with an iPhone, with the widest angle and you can see it looks totally different. Getting close with a wide angle TS lens changes the perspective entirely

Flatiron, New York 2017 Taken with a TS lens and 16-stop ND filter. To me Fine art photography, is the expression of a lived internal subjective experience. If it’s authentic, it is always true and cannot be subjected to any external criticism. Software: Artisan Pro bwvision.com/ps-plugins/
A color photo of the flatiron building in New York city, taken in 2017. Shot with a 24mm Tilt shift lens to keep the verticals straight, from up-close

Zeeland bridge. A seascape for a change. I took this with a prototype of the Phase One Achromatic in 2017 to test the camera for them. The quality is amazing, also due to the lack of a Bayer color filter. I had to return the camera, unfortunately. Processed with the Artisan Pro panel.

I am so excited about the migration from X that I made a whole YouTube video about what it takes to run a social media company in a responsible way. Don't worry, I will be back to covering the normal topics and the war in Ukraine next time.

Chrysler Building New York 2014 I took this one while teaching a workshop in NYC, demonstrating you could capture the building from across the street, using a wide-angle tilt shift lens, shifted all the way up. Soon announcing another workshop.
