In the past, the rich used to pay higher taxes. Now, the government pays the rich interest on a swelling debt, caused largely by lower taxes on the rich. It's a big switcheroo that we need to talk about if we're going to talk about the national debt.

America is an incredibly right-wing country. The majority of Democrats are really center or center-right. If you want real change, not a return to the status quo ante that'll lead us right back here, you have to vote progressive or further left at all possible times.

The "centrist" think tank Third Way is looking to pay someone between $140,000 and $150,000 to spend their days trying to dig up dirt on DSA members. They're trying to sell this gig as "anti-extremism" work, which I find completely disgusting.
from job listing:

As the Director of Anti-Extremism, a typical day might include…

Assembling and updating a database of the DSA’s most extreme ideas and statements and a repository of voting records, affiliations, and issue positions to make available to allies and partners;
Leading public opinion research to identify and test the contrasts that move base voters away from these extreme candidates;
Overseeing the development of memos, talking points, rapid response materials, and other products that make the case against these extreme forces in American politics;
Promoting and marketing our research and materials to ensure they reach decisionmakers quickly, repeatedly, and at scale through a coordinated distribution infrastructure;
Recruiting and arming a group of young, diverse spokespeople to fight the DSA from a center-left perspective and assembling a broad coalition of organizational partners to make the case against extremism;
Running an earned media program to create a drumbeat of our message in op-eds, television appearances, podcasts, and traditional and digital media engagement.

The wealthy need to pay more taxes 100%, wealth concentration hasn't been this bad in a century, but tax dodging is incredibly damaging too. Without even changing the taxes on the books, just going after dodgers and loops holes, the IRS estimates they'd collect another $500 billion a year.

A big part of the authoritarian playbook is war. War takes over the news. War blots out criticism. War divides a nation’s people, subjecting those against it to being called unpatriotic. War grants leaders all sorts of emergency powers. War consumes everything else. We mustn’t let this war do so.

It's technically proper in English to refer to non-human entities as 'it'. I think this is a mistake. Putting plants and animals on a more equal footing in our language may just be a way to get people to consider them more our counterparts on the only place life's known to exist.

The more I think about it, the more I despise the word "consumer." Yes, yes, under some contexts it's appropriate, but I hear academics and politicians use it far too frequently to describe populations. These are citizens and, more importantly, people. The use of "consumer" is oddly dehumanizing.

My statement on President Trump’s combat operations in Iran⬇️
OCASIO-CORTEZ STATEMENT ON
TRUMP'S COMBAT OPERATIONS IN IRAN
"The American people are once again dragged into a war they did not want by a president who does not care about the long-term consequences of his actions. This war is unlawful. It is unnecessary. And it will be catastrophic.

"Just this week, Iran and the United States were negotiating key measures that could have staved off war. The President walked away from these discussions and chose war instead.President Trump flippantly acknowledged the possibility of American casualties, stating "that often happens in war.'

"Mr. President: this was not an inevitability. This is a deliberate choice of aggression when diplomacy and security were within reach. Stop lying to the American people.

"Violence begets violence. We learned this lesson in Iraq. We learned this lesson in Afghanistan. And we are about to learn it again in Iran. Bombs have yet to create enduring democracies in the region and this will be no different.

"In moments of war, our Constitution is unambiguous: Congress authorizes war. The President does not. I will do my part to uphold our Constitution by voting YES on Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie's War Powers Resolution. Every member of Congress must join us in rejecting this aimless war.
